I don't need to hide rolls to fudge. With 3e's staggering array of modifiers, pluses, and minuses you can just bump around numbers until you get the desired effect. Power attack is quite useful for this - if you want to miss when the die said it hit, you can always claim that you were power attacking that round. And if you did a d8 + 7 last round, but only do a d8 + 2 this round again you can claim power attack. Expertise allows plausible deniability on variable armor classes as well.
