the elements of this age?

If you want a more realistic modern representation of the elements I would go with:

Space (replaces air)
Time (replaces water)
Matter (replaces earth)
Energy (replaces fire)

This isn't the D&D Immortals set =)

White Wolf did a pretty good take on modern elementals in their book Axis Mundi for Mage/Werewolf. I'd suggest skimming that--if I can find my copy I'll post them later.

I'd just keep the same for. I still breathe air, drink water, walk on earth and cook with fire.
BTW I don't think organic or blood is an elemental any more than it was with the original four, its no more prevalent today than it was then.

But if you want more of an opinion on what you wanted how about:
Synthetic
Atomic
Ploution (this one I'm a bit iffy on)
Electricity (this one too)

Assuming modern philosophical and scientific knowledge, it seems to me:

Energy is the Whole (all things are really energy masquerading as them)
The Elements of Energy would be Virtual, Material, Spiritual, and Void.

1. Solids, e.g. earth
2. Liquids, e.g. water
3. Gases, e.g. air
4. Energy, e.g. fire

I'd modify this a bit:

1. Solids = earth
2. Liquids = water
3. Gases = air
4. Plasma = fire (as in the stuff in the sun, not as in blood plasma)

And, there's the oft forgotten/ignored fifth element (which isn't the one in the similarly-titled movie, IIRC): ether.

5. Ether = energy

Think of the elements as a means for the ancients to conceptualize the different states of matter--same basic concepts, yet different terms used.

... I don't see why the classic four - Earth Air Fire and Water can work in a modern setting

I dunno about Water, but Earth, Wind and Fire still ROCK DA HOUSE!

Oh, I suppose they could. But we're looking at this from the perspective: When was the last time you got your hands down in the dirt, hung around a campfire, felt the wind in your hair, or splashed around in the lake?

Well maybe not the lake (more like the ocean) and I haven't camped for a while, but yeah I am surrounded by nature everyday.

In the modern world, we surround ourselves with other 'elements'. Think pop culture, city sprawl, consumerism - the new, developed forces of 'nature' activated by man.

Or at least that's the premise we're working on.

I know, I know, I was just sayin'...
