I’m not saying bias doesn’t exist. It does. But if we’re comparing humans‘ physical performance to RPG characters, elite athletes are DEFINITELY who we should be looking at. D&D‘s strength charts start getting into Olympic levels around Str 15 or so. Jumping distances for RPG characters get into world record ranges as well…in armor. Etc. And the examples I’ve chosen were specifically picked to minimize bias. The Williams sisters started playing tennis at ages comparable to their male peers. AFAIK, there’s no difference between the rackets men use and those women use. And yet there’s a 35mph difference between the womens’ & mens‘ fastest serve. Same kind of comparison between the modern male and female golfers. The gear doesn’t differ, the ranges they can strike from does. The current record for women is held by Phillis-Jean Meti at 415 yards in 2019. For men, it’s 515 yards by Mike Austin…set in 1974. The PGA average long drive last year was 295 yards. The LPGA average was 250 yards. And while Margo Dydek is as tall as or taller than many NBA centers, she gives up 20+lbs to most of the more famous players at the center (her) position. Hakeem Olajuwon was 255 (30lbs more), Bill Lambeer was 245, Shawn Bradley was 275lbs, and Shaq’s play weight was 315-340lbs. That mass doesn’t just translate into the force of a body crashing the paint, it’s also part of the strength required to control/steal rebounds. You know who played the position in the NBA at 225? Manute Bol.
