The Games Plus Auction and Core Books

At the Games Plus auction this last weekend a Pathfinder core book sold for $35, a set of the first three 4E books sold for $38 and a set of three core 3.5 books sold for $42. There were some other sales of individual books from both 4E and 3.5E, and when the auction was all over there were left over books from both that the seller probably set too high an opening bid on (often $25 for a single book). There were also a slew of 3.0E PHs, MMs and DMGs that didn't sell at any price (opening bid often $1).

At several local FLGS, they're still able to sell mint condition second handed copies of the 3.5E core books at the original full MSRP cover prices each. Apparently there is still demand for it.

Every time a copy of any second handed 3.5E core book comes in at these FLGS, it is sold within a week or two.

At one FLGS, the owner mentioned that they won't take in any second handed copies of the 4E core books anymore. Apparently they sit on the shelves for a long time collecting dust.

With new 4E books still available, I wonder if the attaction of used 4E books is any real draw. If someone wants a discount on 4E books, I suppose they would go to Amazon and grab new ones.

At the Half Price Books there have been 4e books, they do not last long on the shelf.

There have been 3.5 core books, they don't last long either.

There have also been 1e core books and I suspect they barely make it to the shelf.

Yeah. When the price is half of cover, I think all editions do pretty well (except maybe 2E). ;)

As far as I can see, there is still a lot of demand for 3.5 Core books and they are increasingly hard to get.

$42 for all three is ridiculously cheap.

The PHB alone usually costs more than that. ;)
The german PHB goes for twice as much and more on ebay.

I'd imagine that the English versions of the 3.5 books are tough to get anywhere these days except online and from the US, mainly.

This probably has nothing to do with the popularity of said editions, and more to do with the fact that you can very easily get ahold of new copies of one, and that it's impossible to get ahold of new copies of the other.

This was most likely the case. These same local FLGS also had several copies of the 3E core books, which also sat around collecting dust for long periods of time.

In the case of used 4E books, somebody who wanted a huge discount could probably get a better deal by ordering them new from amazon.
