For those that haven't heard, the Gates of Hell is a project that Dicefreaks has been working on for almost a year and a half (and some parts for longer, according to Serge). We have bundled into some 400 plus pages flavor, new incantations and epic spells, new feats and prestige classes, variant rules for deities and cosmic entities and other things, and high powered unique devils (including Dukes of Hell, Arch-Devils and Lords of the Nine). Considering that he Monster Manual places the beginning level of Pit Fiend at 18 HD (with a Max HD and strongest MM version at 54 HD!), we found it strange to treat the powers of Hell as being Cr 20-32 or so (a max HD Pit Fiend is CR 39 or so by WotC's system).

Although there is a definite bias towards epic gaming, there is plenty for gamers of all types. Check out Chapter 1 today to see whether you are interested in the rest - we hope not to disappoint!

(All chapters will be free downloads)

It looks good so far. This chapter is really like an extended introduction -- it explains all of the terms that will be used and the politics that DF assumes. It also makes the setting (Hell) clear for those unfamiliar with the core cosmology.

Frankly, as I run a homebrew setting with heavily-modifed planes, this chapter isn't very useful for me. (This isn't, of course, a critique -- without peeking at my notes, it really couldn't be!)

I look forward eagerly to the coming chapters!

Heh. Titivulus, although the weakest Duke we've statted, is a great read (I can say that because I didn't write him - Titi was all Serge's work). Indeed, he's made a few appearances in some dicefreak online games.

Glad to hear it, CRGreathouse.

I think you'll find the next two chapters more to your liking. Forbidden Magic (Chpt 2) is mainly crunch, dealing with epic spells, incantations, new magic items and abilities, and information on how to summon a Duke of Hell, Arch-Devil or Lord of the Nine to the Prime. We're much less likely to tread on your homebrew work there. Prestige Classes of Perdition (Chpt 3) may be of even more use to you, particularly if you don't run epic games.
