Now that would be a cool tribute to earlier editions and a form of continuation. Having the statue be an integral part of the first 4E adventure, maybe included in de new DMG or somesuch as example of play?

FWIW, the D&D Alumni article isn't really showing the first PHB cover---it's actually displaying the image to the first basic book cover from the 1977 Holmes Basic set; the first PHB cover would really be the Men & Magic booklet from the OD&D box set, which looked like this: http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/setpages/setscans/book1v1.html

In any event, I've always found the PHB cover to be as inspiring not just for the demon idol, but for the party size, the PCs dragging around corpses to hide them (?), and the general environs. I've included it in the past in a level of my own version of Castle Greyhawk, too, since it's so iconic :D
