The requirements to open a portal was a black wizard who has done the most unspeakable of evil acts working in conjunction with a cleric of good of the purest of heart.

Could you even find someone that would fit #2?

Tas has a pure heart.
Have him pick up a level of Cleric.
This *is* third edition after all :D
And the xp penalty be damned,
they're saving the world here. :D

As far as I remember Sturm is still dead along with all of Caramon's sons (except for Palin).

True - but Sturm still returned and played and important part as a ghost in Dragons of Summer Flame. Shame about him and Steel - men of the right stature ;)...

All this stuff seems rather interesting but I'm afraid I've only read the Chronicles and Legends triologies.

What books do I have to read to catch up?

Basicly?

Dragons of Summer Flame, and the two currently out War of the Souls books.

It doesn't cover the Great Dragons MUCH, but it does give you an idea about them. And honestly there aren't many facts about the great dragons known anyhoo.

The important ones to read after Chronicles and Legends is the other Hickman & Weis books -- that covers all the important bases (and its the best stuff!)

1. The Second Generation (a short anthology preluding DoaSF)
2. Dragons of a Summer Flame
3. War of Souls #1 -- Dragons of a Fallen Sun
4. War of Souls #2 -- Dragons of a Lost Star

and coming in June

5. War of Souls #3 -- Dragons of a Vanished Moon
