D&D 5E The impact of ASIs

The cumulative effect of going to 20 in an important AS is large. Very large. But true, its not flashy.

They can lead to a saminess in characters, which I do not like.

But the real problem is feats, which remain a f____ing mess.

Roll your stats.
Forget ASI as you level.
Use feats and add a bit more of them.
Make them impactfull.

Raising stats should've never been part of the game.
Max stat should be 18 or 20 if you have a +2 racial in it.
But that is not how the game turned out to be.

Funny how so many people on opposite sides of the racial vs. floating ASI debate agree on this point.

Count me in.
 


In the old days ya got what ya got. Unless you found a wish or a precious few items your ability scores were pretty static.
In the AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide, your character's ability scores changed automatically with age bracket. Physical stats gradually went down, mental stats up.

Hm. Just another way casters outshone martials! :p

FWIW, few characters IME ever moved from one age group to another unless a lot of magical aging happened....

And yeah, I know it was supposed to represent the "older but wiser" concept, but not very accurate IME.

My pal had an old evil wizard with a con penalty and was feeble!
