D&D 5E The Kalarian Precipice - Chapter Four

Metea

Metea: The grinning skull

"Good idea, Otiroth! Freeze it, and I bet it's jelly will shatter!"

Metea would never forget how Otiroth stood by her when she was too afraid to even move to face the horribly hairy demons above. She would stand by him now. He could do this!

As for her, well, she was nervous about the party being split up, such as it were- there were two beasts, and now Jeovanna was facing one of them practically alone. Metea had already placed her hex on the far demon, though, and would deliver to it another blast of eldritch energy.

If Jeovanna could hold out, and they could slay this first demon quickly... then the others could fall upon the second and end it swiftly!

Fiends: The Grinning Skull

The priest’s mace slams an ugly reptilian head, snapping it abruptly to the left and surely splitting some bone. That will swell up, for sure, if it lives long enough. Eyes of hatred fall on Carthum then, as the ranger’s sword swings idly past through the air. More Eldritch pain follows. Like an isolated shower of lightning the monstrosity is once again subjected to a warlock's torture!

Ah, the bold ranger, the fiend saw that miss and takes a chance. Angry, hurt and frothing with hatred, a twist of the torso, the beast lashes it's tail out to slam against the sword-weilder, a hard and brutal smash to his side! From the ooze, droplets of liquid are secreted in the frenzy, and how they burn, acid! Dain’s chest area begins to steam as the potent side-effect melts down, through leather and cloth, down into flesh!

The other monstrosity, before Annit and Jeovanna, is not so lucky. A greatsword runs deep upon the creature’s neck, a horrible wound, but not quite deep enough to see a second disembodied cranium in the hall. With one clawed hand it reaches up to it's wound, the other lashing out at the large woman with a nasty set of claws. It has missed!

“Ah ha foul snotfiends! Your day has come!”

<Fiend 1 attack Dain = 13 (Hit). 9hp slam damage + 4hp acid damage.
Fiend 2 attack Annit = 8 (Miss).

Carthum One-Tusk: The Grinning Skull

The smell of sizzling flesh once more punishes them- a vicious, unlucky strike.

"Demon! You dare turn your eyes from Suru's light?"

Carthum's next magic-blow perhaps hits, but against the jelly-ooze belly, it more bounces off than anything- it is like striking a ball of water!

Pain. The smell of acrid flesh. Misery.

Is it any wonder Dain's strike is errant?

Devil's arse! I flail like a limp necked doe full of Hunter's barbs! A foul fate, but not am unjust one!

<To strike=6>
CRITICAL FAIL

Otiroth

Otiroth: The Grinning Skull

This was simply not working!

Otiroth actively propped up the elbow of his injured arm with his good one, and would cast once more. This was his third shot against the first demon, who even now seemed to blubber off the half-orc and the ranger's attack- so he had to make it count.

"Magic missile!" The darts flew off to strike the demonic glob.

<Spell casting- magic missile. 13 damage>
<One first level spell left...>

Fiends: The Grinning Skull

The sorcerer has regained himself! A priest’s mace just failing to hit with enough impact to bruise. A ranger’s strike gone… well, far wide. It is the magical darts that finally bring down the foe! With immense agony and regret in it's crocodilian eyes, the fiend falls backwards. Ooze melts and steams against the floor, and the head of the beast flops sideways, jaws forever locked open in what might have been a scream.

Dain’s sword has lost the ranger’s grip, and skidded off to lie precariously close to a stream of burning coals. Quick! He’d better retrieve it before a second forging does more damage than good!

“Two minus one, crocodile’s bum!” The skull is clearly impressed.

With Jeovanna dangerously close, Annit drops her bow and whips out a dagger. Light of foot, she steps into the melee, hoping that her agility will keep both the fiend… and Jeovanna’s angry sword out of her way! She ducks low, and feigns a stab at the horrid thing’s tail.

<Annit is “helping”. Jeovanna may have advantage on her next attack roll. Any range weapons or spells that require attack rolls will be at disadvantage, if fired into/through this melee. Also of course, remote chance of friendly fire :)
Fiend 1 is dead!>

DIE

"Hands off! Your blood is mine!" This is the first thing that is not just maddened laughter. It is not, perhaps, an improvement.

DIE

Another slash, this one aiming for the same spot as the last, except from the other direction, this time. Or perhaps Jeovanna was simply offended that the demon had reached to touch its wound, and wanted to take its arm.

It was likely she had not noticed one of her pack getting injured. It was also likely she couldn't get any angrier, anyway.

<To hit- 23. Damage 16>

The first had fallen apart! Now, to the second!

But that talking skull- that was a bit disconcerting. One of many disconcerting things, actually, that had struck her at that moment.

"Suffer!" She spat in Infernal, and would move her hex spell onto the other demon. Let it suffer the same curse that had lain misery on its comrade!

Of course... that was all well and good, but firing into the fray was rather fraught with peril. And Metea did not want to accidentally hit Jeovanna- the barbarian would probably cut her head off! She'd miss, and her shot went much wider than any of Otiroth's had!

<Bonus action: move Hex onto a new target>
<Spellcasting- eldritch blast. 10, miss>

The barbarian's blade once again slashes against a neck, tearing a vicious gash beneath the gruesome head. Ah it weakens! As much from the brutality of cold steel, as from a curse which falls upon it, leeching away a portion of the creature's strength.

Lucky for Annit, that a lashing set of claws misses her in poorly whipped response.

<Attack Annit = 7 (Miss)>

Round 3:

21. Carthum
13. Dain -13hp
11. Otiroth
10. Annit
7. Jeovanna
7. Metea
5. Fiend 1 ~Dead~
5. Fiend 2 -28hp ~Hexed disad str checks~

Carthum looks at the scene, but can not immediately see a safe way to close with the final demon. Not without scrambling onto coals!

He once more bangs his mace against his shield, striking out harshly with sacred flame!

Carthum had receive some training in the crossbow- he should have brought one!

<Damage 3 if successful>
