The Land of Sand and Sun

Kilmore

First Post
Okay, I'm making the land of sand and sun in my campaign. I wanna use elements of traditional desert games, but of course, I want to shake things up a little, too.

So far, I've recognized two main D&D desert type settings.

1. Arabian Adventures, based on historical desert cultures, with genies and flying home decorations, and
2. Dark Sun/Barsoom style. Scattered powerful city states, running around nearly nekkid killin' things.

I like the possibilities of both, and in fact, they aren't mutually exclusive. If nothing else, it's a big desert.

I have a few ideas for things, but I want more. First, here's what I have.

1.) A map. I'm visually oriented. If I don't have a clue about anything else, I always have a map.

2.) A big "stock fantasy" style empire from the north owns much of the northern part of the desert, including several massivealacious cities along the coast. The empire has a good deal of effect on the cultures of the cities, but they are very much a mixture of "north" and "south".

3.) A nation named "Zazimar" is an enemy of the Empire, inhabited by a breed of humans who are known for using dark magic and martial arts.

4.) Somewhere out here is a race of elves, my campaign "Dark Elves" with light coffee colored skin and "metallic" (silver, gold, copper, graphite) hair. More chaotic neutral than evil, but they don't get along with the other elves. I've given the preliminary name "Dusk Elves", but I don't like that.

5.) A nation named "Sapoth", which screams "Egypt!" so far, but I want to make it similar yet different.

Heck, I don't even know what I'm asking for here. I just wanna get something kicking. And I wanna think about desert things coz it's cold in here.

Wonderful map, but it looks like you took a map from Axis and Allies Europe and colored in a few regions ... did you modify it from another Euro map?

Nope. I drew it all myself in Illustrator. I am aware of the similarities with the real world, and at times I think it's helpful, but at others it irks me a little.

This is kind of random, but you might want to check out the book "Fortress of the Pearl" by Michael Moorcock. It's one of the later-written Elric books, and it details his adventures in a desert kingdom (I forget which one - my grasp on Moorcock's geography was never that firm). There are some incredibly flavorful elements to the book, including descriptions of both cities and nomad dwellings, a strange kind of desert beetle, and some unusual funeral rites.

Actually I have been trying to track down the entire Elric series. I kinda wanna start at the front.

Desert lizards are cool. One of my PC's already found an egg. Not sure what it is, yet.
