Late to the party on this: I just finished LLL and thought it was pretty wonderful. I felt that Scott Lynch was really going out of his way to be entertaining, and instead of feeling pandered to, I felt... well, really entertained (and even appreciative of his efforts).
I'll pick up the sequel once I plow through some books I have on order from Amazon (The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The Complete Novels of Flann O'Brien and Pirate Sun)

Finished the first book and enjoyed it tremendously.
[sblock]I did think the Bondsmage were kinda overpowered, and even if Locke didn't kill him I would be surprised if the other mages don't hunt him down.
The only other thing was how Locke's character seemed underdeveloped, compared to Jean. LL just seemed to be a walking bag of tricks. Why were the bastards getting all that gold? Just for the fun of it?

Still, it was a great, enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next.

I enjoyed it, but I thought it was a bit long-winded. Whatever happened to careers in fiction editing?
Fantasy is notorious for being over-written and being twice as long as it needs to be, and I think Locke Lamora was a good example of it. It took me two tries to get into it, because I got distracted by faster moving novels and had to take it back to the library.

Reading the sequel, and seems to carry over lots of elements from the first novel.
[sblock]Locke and Jean are pressed into service to work for someone, and they also reveal their objective to their mark early on. Also, once again, a game with humans fighting a beastie of some sort features in the story.

I wish that you folks would stop beating around the bush, and tell us what you really thought of the book. 
(Joking, just in case you could not guess, I picked up LLL on the strength of this thread, so far it is very good.

Loved LLL.
Thought Red Seas was weak as hell. Lynch just seemed to recycle part of the plot from his first book, and recycled the same "tough chick" persona for like 80% of his characters in that book. Plus, the whole pirate thing? What the hell was that about?
I hope the third book lives up to the promise of the first, and doesn't take after the second.
