I am in a campaign with a spell point system rather similar to this.

My feedback? It's horribly unbalanced.

The problem with spell point systems is that if it's anything close to allowing the normal Wizard distribution, it allows way too many high level spells and huge gobs of low level spells.

My view, which is probably unpopular, is that the flexibility given to such a mage is balanced if you do something like 'spell points = 4x the highest level spell you can cast'

That way, if you cast 5th level spells, you can cast 4 5th level spells. Or 20 1st level spells.

In the campaign I'm in, the spell points for mages and clerics basically means both classes rule completely. If you want to be a fighter or something, be a cleric and have magic squirting out your ears, too.

A number of months ago I also wrote up a magic system based off of RM among other ideas that I had developed over the years.

While it does not use points, it does make both the Wizard and Sorcerer much more versatile without really increasing their power levels too much.

Does anyone have any ideas on how they calculated the PPs per level for the psionic classes?

Psionic classes get enough extra PP at each level to manifest one power of their highest level. The exception is at level 20 for Psions, where they get 19 more PP - enough to manifest a 10th level power if there would be one (theoretically, 10th level powers would be available at 20th level, so there is symmetry).

Use Psi rules?

As someone else pointed out to me, Bruce Cordell did convert the spells to Psi in "If Looks Could Kill", his Psi adventure, he converts the spells to the Psi areas.

Doesn't that make sense? As I recently pondered, isn't 3E Psi a little better than spells for the following reasons:

1) Mana points, essentially.
2) Allows Mage combat with attacks and defenses. (Just rename for style)
3) Balanced against not having as many spells.

Perhaps this could be sorcerer? Gives them even more flexibility. Also, since they can trade down with slots, all this does is allow them to trade up for higher level spells as well.

He also has the Psi Points listed and it seems pretty reasonable.

I guess this just fits my style though. I like more choices for spell casters. This could even be done for clerics (or druids?) as well.

Thoughts? Any other ideas? Would this work do people think?
