The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977

D&D General The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977 Coming In June

Just got mine and spent all day flipping through it. Sooooooooooo worth the money IMO (even though I'm pretty sure I've had this all material as a PDF dump years ago...)

Also, got a kick out of the use of "Forward" and "Foreward" used throughout after the scolding we all got the other day. Even funnier because it wasn't even the foreword that was controversial, but rather the preface, so didn't even need to use it.

I got mine too. And you are right, most of the stuff we have been discussing here and that has gained traction is from the preface (thought he foreword itself has a handful of mindless** remarks and repeats the broad brush disclaimer WOTC put on TSR products). I was not expecting the book to be this big. I knew it was large, but up close it is considerably larger than I thought it would be

** Didn't mean to type mindless. Not sure what word I was trying to type. But leaving it in tact so that follow up quotes to this post make sense

Just checking: do you also think those of us who think those remarks are reasonable are also “mindless”? That seems like the obvious inference.

No I don't. That was actually a typo (I am not even sure what I was trying to type but it wasn't 'mindless'. I didn't mean to say mindless (though I do disagree with many of the remarks themselves). My feeling is reasonable people can disagree about this stuff. If I am looking at a text and don't see a problem but you look at it and do, we may just have different sensibilities, sensitivities and different assumptions

Edit: Thinking on it I think I was trying to say 'mild' as I was referring to the Foreword which is less focused on that stuff than that preface

Also for clarity here, since you and I have often been on different sides of the aisle on some of these topics (though I have also found we agree on things too): you seem like a decent and intelligent person to me. I don't think you are coming at this from a bad place or a mindless place. We just have slightly different views of the world and our emotional reactions to these things also seem a bit different. I don't doubt your sincerity on these topics when you've discussed them. Part of my concern when these topics are raised is how divided people are and how we have sometimes dehumanized each other in how we dismiss other people and their opinions. So I am not interested in contributing to that. Like I have said, this is a big hobby with lots of different kinds of people and no one is going away any time soon so we have to figure out a way to share the space with people we don't agree with.
