The Matrix: Only Human

Finished reading the whole thing this morning, and I gotta say I love it. I hope to use it soon in a campaign of my own. Thank you for making this, I have desperately been searching for Matrix D20 rules.

Are you planning on updating and expanding it? If so, taking any requests? There's lots of things I'd like to see.

Does this game require the Anime SRD for playing? Some of the Matrix powers mention defensive maneuvers, but I wasn't sure if that was just left over terminology or not.
Thanks very much!

Yes, I always update/expand it. Let me know what you'd like to see or what changes you feel need to be changed.

It shouldn't require the Anime SRD, although that will definitely allow you to expand the game significantly in directions I wasn't willing to do. Some of the stuff Lonewolf mentioned would are certainly possible with the Anime SRD.

The defense maneuvers references was left in there in error. I'm not trying to duplicate the entire Anime SRD ruleset (that's what the SRD is for). If you can tell me where specifically, I can clean it up.

I can't help but wonder this ... why is it more costly to get points, later in your character development .. than earlier?

Also .. just an idea that might give you some ideas, you might just look at Blood and Fists, from RPGObjects, for some of the martial arts.
I didn't think about it much, as this rule is taken directly from the Anime SRD. My guess is, it's to ensure that there's a challenge to gaining ranks. As is, you basically just buy points and that's it, with no scaling whatsoever.

The mechanic is interesting because, and this may be a particular anime thrust, it really encourages you to buy all your points early in your character's development. I don't think I mind this. I also don't think I mind that in the Matrix, it means if you really want the kickass powers later on, you're going to have to choose between spending exp on leveling or gaining powers. Because it costs more, there's an inherent disadvantage to leveling.

If you changed it to a fixed rate, characters rapidly spiral out of control as they now are superior level-wise as well as point wise.

Of course, if you were to play the anime SRD straight, levels are much less relevant. But using the Anime SRD point system with d20 Modern...it feels like an equitable tradeoff.

Honestly? Who knows, I just make this crap up as I go along and leverage any SRD/OGL info that seems to fit right. :)

A very different conversion

Its quite a bit different from the Wushu version

http://bayn.org/wushu/freebies.html

but I like having both to look at. I am going to do a Mage conversion for my Players (I am kind of sick of d20 and really want to use White Wolf and I bought Exalted for the more cinematic rules) and have used suggestions from both versions. Also the Wushu virtual-voodoo has an expansion on the Matrix that can be used.

Sincerely,

Sammy Grimes

P.S. I think every character point that characters purchase should have +0.1 ECL (round down) at least in the matrix. It shouldn't affect the cost of character points.

The way it works, I believe, is to equal 1/10th the cost of your level is 1 point. So while in terms of numbers, the points cost more at later levels, in terms of portions or fractions, it costs the exact same amount.

Talien, again, great work on this. I don't remember where the reference to defensive maneuvers was exactly, it was under one of the powers. I'll be using the book a lot if I run a campaign, so I can note things that I come across and send them to you en mass, if you'd like.

Things I'd love to see:

-Stats for ships!
-Rogue/Exiles as a player class
-Guidelines for waking someone from the Matrix (...maybe)
-Everything that was in the movies explained in carefully detailed D20 rules

That's not too much, is it?:)

Stats for ships: Which ones? There are stats for the hovercrafts on page 31.

Rogue/Exiles...can you elaborate? You mean Agent Smith types within the Matrix, or exiles outside of the Matrix?

Guidelines for waking someone is a good point. In fact, I think I should reference the "faith" mechanic, which I believe would probably be a modification of the Action Point system.

Everything else. Uh...that's tough since the very nature of the movies is "there is no one way." I'm not well-versed enough in all the various religions the movies reference, but I know enough to know that I don't know enough. :)

Within, mostly. PRograms like the Merovingian and Persephone, possibly Seraph. The Trainman, the Keymaker, I think they were all programs that had overstayed, basically, and decided not to be deleted.
