The Merovingian (minor matrix spoilers).

Is there more to the Merovingian than meets the eye? I'm guessing we are going to see alot more of the Merovingian in the next movie.

I think most people know who the Merovingians were in history (a dynasty that ruled France from about the 5th century to the 8th century). One legend says that the Merovingians are descended from the relatives of Jesus.

Persephone also mentions that the Merovigian used be a lot like Neo in the beginning.

So, does anyone have any theories regarding this character?
I was wondering if the Merovingian has a bigger connection to one of the previous appearances of the one.

I have a hairbrained theory that he is a former One (or just an "enlightened" human) who no longer has physical form and exsists only in the Matrix. This is based on nothing but my thoughts at the time of the viewing... ;)

Now that's an interesting thought. We know that the body can't exist without the mind, and if the mind dies in the matrix, the body dies in RL. However, is the reverse true? Most of the mind is jacked into the Matrix, but not all of it, you still need some to govern breathing, heart beats, etc (I know there's a technical term for this and it has escaped me).

Neo has shown that he can die and still be reborn. What would happen to his mind if his body was unplugged from the Matrix? I think this would play into the idea of who persophone is (as the wife of the Hades).

It also occurred to me that the Merovingian might be an AI that was changed by 'the one' in a similiar way that Agent Smith was changed by Neo.

Also, did anybody notice the fellow who was being escorted from the Merovingian's place? That guy and Neo exchange glances...it seemed to a bit more important that just background for the scene. I don't think there is anyway to know for sure until the third movie but it is still fun to speculate.

My theory is that the Merovingian is the first One, and the only other to choose as Neo did. It is he that is the cause of the first Matrix' utter failure because he became a Dark Lord figure much like how Anakin became Vader: the Merovingian is the One That Failed, and Persephone is his Trinity.

I think we need to look at the mythological relationship of Persephone to Hades in Greek myth. Hades was a god. The "gods" of the Matrix are enlightened programs. My theory is that the Merovingian is such a program. Persephone however, lives the half-life, much as the Persephone of myth does. She is probably, as Corinth said, the "Trinity" to the first One. Loving her One as she did, she sacrificed herself to live in the Matrix for some higher altruistic goal.

Sounds good to me anyway. Anybody have the recipe for that cake, btw? :D

I have feeling he is the 5th "One". He reloaded the last matrix but refused to die. He probably copied himself and since the matrix didn't need him anymore just hide. But since he knew it wasn't real made himself rich and powerful and got all the rogue programs to join him and protect him. Now with NEO about to eliminate this Matrix that he created he doesn't know what will happen to him. Maybe in his Matrix there was a person like him now but once the Merovingian reloaded it he was gone. He doesn't want that to happen to him.

But thats all my theory.

The more I think about this the more I like the idea that the merovingian was the one in a previous iteration of the matrix.

It would be heavy burden to know that you were part of the destruction of the former Zion. In a sense, he is damned because his actions when he was 'the one'. The fits in fairly nicely with who persophone was in mythology.
