The Monk: What changes would you like to see?

Merlion

Ok another class we're told is going to be getting a tune up in 3.5 Personaly, I'd like to see Ki Strike earlier, and clarifications on unarmed attack bonus, (and of course the alignment restriction changed unlikely as that is). Anyone have any other thoughts/ideas?

I hope they will add options so that you don't have to end up as a generic monk. You don't end up as a generic fighter, you become some form of fighter ranging from grappler via swaschbuckler to knight. I'd like the monk class to give a wider range of abilities so that you might become an extraplanar being, a ninja or Shaolin-like mystical helper.

I think there should be the different focuses a monk could take, like being more like a rogue or even a performer(like bard without an instrument) as well as a part fighter or part ranger.

I agree. The matter gets confusing.

I would either like to see a feat system like fighters- and turn some of the monk abilities turned to feats. The monk gets a list of feats to choose from.

Or, if you don't want a +10 movement feat, - adapt the monk to have a talent tree like the base classes do in D20 modern. Let the player mix it up a bit.

In the end it is not a big deal- between OA and Quint Monk, there are now enough variations to get what we (my group) want out of monks.

Although I quite like this idea, ultimately, I say get rid of the monk and keep it to setting books. It's just out of place in D&D, IMO, and only causes problems when players go, "Aww, but surely there's a way my character could've travelled three-thousand miles from the asian-like continent without gaining a single iota of XP!"

I would like to see them removed from the core rules. They work well in an oriental setting, but feel very, very out of place in a typical D&D setting.

I honestly think they ought to get the boot as a core class.

They should be replaced with a more generic, highly customizable class that specializes in fighting using little or no armor (not necessarily unarmed, though), and relies on dexterity and speed.

That way you could build either a character similar to a D&D monk, or an effective lightly armored "finesse fighter", something that under current rules Rogues do better than Fighters.
