The Mortal God

God-Fight (pick with the ONE with which you MOST agree)

  • Gods are beyond PCs. They don’t need stats, and can always squash characters like gnats.

  • Gods are better then PCs. But they can have (massive) stats, and engage with those little “epics”

  • Gods can be challenged by PCs. Godly stats needed.

  • Gods can be defeated by PCs. Gods are stated up like epic characters, but with advantages.

  • Gods can be permanently destroyed. Stats needed, as is someway to destroy the being.

We have had a few hints (actually more then hints) that 4thed will, at some point, feature statted up gods, all ready for a fighting, and maybe even killing.

This has a long history in D&D. What do you think?

Poll coming
"If you give it stats, someone will try to kill it (and take its stuff)."

That said, I'd rather have deities with stats. This way, if I want statless deities, who function entirely behind the scenes or as plot devices, I can ditch the stats without problem.

Nope, can't say I like it. A mortal avatar for a god, maybe. Killing the god itself, not as much. I know most people probably disagree with me on this.

I agree - I went one higher than you. Gods remain unassailable IMC.

The clue suggests LVL 30 is the cap for new D&D. I have never played much past 20, but the idea of a level cap is kind of a downer.

Gods being challenged by mortals - and killed by other gods (Balder, anyone?) - is a staple of mythology. But for a mortal to kill a god? Outwitting is fine but killing isn't.

This.

I'm kinda hoping this means the only path to greater power after level 30 is to become a god.

I am becoming a fan of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series of books by Steven Erikson. In those books, deities can definitely be challenged, and defeated, and even killed. I am in favor of making that possible in D&D. It's truly epic!

I don't think I'll ever run a god-killing campaign that involves killing a god the hard way, ie, by smashing its hit points.

I might run a god-killing campaign where epic quests and artifacts were involved, but not one where the god was killed by being run through.

That being said, it is easier to ignore god-killing in a game that has it than it is to add god-killing to a game which does not. So I'm for this change.

I prefer "Gods may or may not be real beings in the ordinary sense. No one ever encounters them, and their power is made manifest only through their clerics... and the faith based powers of clerics might very well be powered by pure faith, and not by an actual diety."

This works fine for Eberron, though perhaps not as well for FR. FR has meddlesome gods that are often messing with the universe more or less directly. Maybe those guys need some stats, so they can be killed. ;)

I prefer the Eberron model where gods are distant, unknowable, and may not even exist at all.

That said, I have no problem with a 30th level character deciding he wants to supplant the God of War either.

edit: it all depends on the campaign. Since it's easier to remove than to add, I vote "stats needed".
