The most challenging part of NWN

Morrus

Well, that was fun

I don't know if anyone noticed, but Bioware included a metagame with NWN. A game within the game. There's a good chance it only came with the 56k modem version of the game, though, so those of you with cable connections have probably missed out here.

When you go to multiplayer, and click on "Join Internet Game", the game logs you into Gamespy and then proceeds to list all the games currently online. The challenge is this: to locate and click on the game of your choice!

Man, this has to be the most challenging part of the whole game. I could spend hours just playing this bit! With a game list that is expanding in front of you, complete with auto-scrolling, even keeping the game you want onscreen for a second is hard enough, let alone aiming at and clicking on it with the mouse pointer before its position in the list changes! It can take 2-3 minutes just to complete the seemingly simple task of clicking on an onscreen option!

Seriously, though - how are poeple with 56k modems finding the multiplayer. I've found that:

1) I cannot host a game with more than two players. It just slows down to an unplayable state.

2) At first it was OK, but recently lag has been a real problem - I haven't played in an online module in days now. When you clikc on a location, my character just stands there for a few seconds and then teleports over there; and when charging to attack a monster, the game will have me run right through it before it seems to suddenly "remember" that there was a monster in the way and teleport me back again to the point where we would have met.

Is there a reason why lag should have suddenly becme a problem? There don't appear to be more people than usual in the games I'm trying to join (sometimes there are none), and this is happening with modules which worked fine before (e.g. Eric's module).

I've had numerous lag problems with Eric's server for a while now. It's also locked up my computer in the past, but that seems to be over now. (Yes, it's only been on Eric's mod, and only on his. That doesn't mean it's his fault, but it does make me wary of checking his stuff out.) :(

I am beginning to STRONGLY suspect Compuserve Classic ( coughcoughAOLcough) is blocking access to some of the ports needed. I can NOT log in to an online game to save my life. I once picked a game with a 218 ping time and let it sit for an hour to be sure, and the screen stayed BLANK. Data is going out just fine, but I'm not getting half as much back as I should.

Yeah, the clicking on the game you want part is really a challenge at times. When the list is fully loaded, it gets better, tho. At least for me at some point the erratic scrolling slows down dramatically.

Bye
Thanee

I am on a 56k modem and have the same trouble as you Morrus. I do remember reading that those on dial-up access would have a 2 player maximum if hosting a game (I think it was on www.neverwinternights.com). I have so far had minimal problems with lag, but this may be because when I am online, all you people over in the States and Europe are probably in bed :).

Lily,

Hopefully no one will bust me for giving out AOL information now that I know longer work for them, but I did Compuserve tech support. If you have ANY and I do mean ANY parental controls or anything like that turned on, AOL software blocks ALL port save for the ones accessed through the AOL/Compuserve software itself. I dealt with this one several times, look through your settings you might have something as simple as a language filter you forgot to turn off cuasing you these problems.

I'm using CS Classic, via a standard DUN connection. All the parental controls are turned off. MOST ports seem to be open, but CSC, NOT CS2000, is blocking access to key ports for "advanced" internet uses, things like IRC and Telnet suddenly, for no apparant reason.

For me, the most challenging part of the game is getting it to actually run on my new XP machine. So far, no luck. I'm still working on it, though. :(
