D&D 5E The most powerful skill feat is...divine initiate?

Yar, it needs to be a true spell at that power level. In fact, at almost any power level. Unless you want to assume that the party has 2-3 extra points in every skill check, which is silly.

To put in proper context, the spell has a specific clause to ensure you can't cast it on more than one person. Now if your whole party takes the feat that is one thing, but it is a precious feat so i would imagine only the skill monkies would want it.

Kind of depends on how heavily your DM makes you use skill checks vs. attack rolls. But even if the whole party doesn't take it, it effectively bumps the DC required to be a "challenge" by 2-3 points, which makes those who don't take it behind in any party that does have a person who takes it and uses it all the time and.....well, yeah, that needs a fix. ;)

Stuff like this makes me wonder if they even understand how their game works. How could they possibly think this spell is okay?

Honestly, they may not, but offering it as an at will gives them a chance to see it in action a lot, and make some balance decisions for it going forward.
