And I really don't understand the people who think the Muppets didn't have an adult angle back in the day.

I thought the Muppets was actually quite good. They were definitely in the humor vein of 30 Rock and The Office more than the original Muppet Show. But I thought it worked pretty well and expanded on some of the characters without contradicting what they stood for. People forget that one of Jim Henson's passions was adult puppetry and there have always been adult humor aspects of the Muppets as well as content directed at children.

No, I didn't forget those things. I just thought The Muppets did not remotely capture either what made the original show great, very much including its style of more adult-facing humour, or the things that separately make 30 Rock and The Office great. It did not work for me, on any level, but I'm glad you liked it.

So apparently it's stuck in development hell, due to "difficulties cracking a premise". Which seems like the dumbest thing ever. We know what the premise is: it's the Muppet Show. Every week, the Muppets put on a show with a more or less famous guest star who gets to show off their stuff, and shenanigans happen. It's not rocket science, except when there's Swine Trek.

It would be 100% plausible for this to be Kingdom Come #5, given the production gaps during the original run.

Yeah, this is about as dumb as you can get.

I am going to guess some nitwit executive has a bee in their bonnet that there needs to be something else - ongoing plot, or something.

Never mind that this format, with these characters and premise, made for one of the most popular shows ever created.

Or...

Okay, this sounds plausible - the reason they stopped making the original was not a ratings problem. It was, iirc, the most popular show on at the time. Henson and his people wanted to leave on a high note, before they had a chance to screw it up.

So, someone at Disney or Henson could be reticent for that same reason - screwing up the Muppets would make a bunch of fans hate you.

Sure, Rogen, et al seem to know what works - but what works for a single special and for a series is not the same thing. It is a "sip test" concern. What is awesome in a small dose could, in theory, be less desireable when you have a regular diet of it - the New Coke problem.

They may be afraid of making New Coke Muppets.
