With such expanse, the two young men quickly reject the possibility of a bridge spanning the distance.</p><p></p><p>It was not known if any civilized tribes lived farther along the river, but the previous discussion lent itself to moving farther downstream in hopes that something of benefit would present itself that would allow the two men to cross. Whisper had no idea how to make a boat. His idea had been to find suitable wood to make swimming easier and prevent a risk of drowning. As luck would have it, the two young men came across a fallen tree that had not been on the ground long enough to begin to rot, but it had dried.</p><p></p><p>With great effort and several breaks for rest, the log is finally pushed into the river and the two men wade in with it. The log does indeed float well and the two hold on with one arm as they pump their legs to propel it across the stream. The current cannot be fought and though the men make the crossing, they deduce that they are quite some distance downstream from where they had entered.
