The Mystic Theurge of the 13 Kingdoms

Ok so here goes my flavor revision of the Mystic Theurge PrC presented in the DMG. Change in requirements. . . must worship Urvon, but not necessarily as a cleric. The rules are identicle to those presented in the DMG (wizard BAB, Good will save, each level gets spell progression of both arcane and divine, d4 HD. . . .)

Cultist of the Staff

When the Cult of the Staff begain nobody knows for sure, but they do know that it was founded in the region of Ceomyr. In this region mages get the respect that nobles have and sorcerer's and wizard's guilds duel. It is believed that Urvon actually left his citadel in order to visit a small temple on our plane, in that region. The god talked to his priesthood, mostly Clr/Wiz with a few Sor/Clr and a Druid mixed in there or two about the conflict between the wizards and sorcereres and said that it was unacceptable. His gift of magic is supposed to spread with his followers, not be used against other worshipers of his. The priests in this temple were in shock after having been visited by their god, some suspected that the Dreamwalkers were being foolish, but that idea was quickly dismissed. The priests knew what they had to do, search out arcane lore wherever it could be found in order to spread the teachings of Urvon. In relation to the Sorcerer and Wizard conflict, the cultists remain neutral while trying to stop the conflict in simple ways. Using the powers of divination magic, sometimes they are able to convince unguilded mages to not fall prey to the ploys of the warring guilds. They plan to eliminate the conflict by taking the neutral approach: showing the power of all arcana and how sorcery and wizardry alike can be powerfull tools.

Ok so that was my attempt at a changed mystic theurge, not sure how well it works. First time doing a heavy flavor writing for a (semi) new class, so if there is something that is not good, change it by all means. This was just an idea I had when reading about the different regions. . . .

The restriction to only one god is probably a bit much. I don't see a need for it since the prestige class isn't built around one type of cleric.

As for the flavor, I'd let someone more familiar with Ceomyr touch on that one. I'm glad to see you make the attempt, Tom. I'm a big fan of the mystic theurge.

Haha yeah looking at what I wrote, it sounds pretty shady and very corny. Oh well, what can ya do. Just using this as an opportunity to let all of you top guys out there know that I would like to see the MT in your setting. Please let me know what the verdict is on this, because with games (hopefully?) starting soon, I want to know if I can have this as an eventual option with my character. Thanks.

Hey, no problem :) I should note that Ceomyr is currently without a CM.

You can find a list at http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63095 of who CMs what.

It's a good attempt, though, I agree! I'd prefer, personally, to see it wrapped into an existing organization rather than a new one if at all possible, to add depth rather than range to the setting, but that's entirely the submitter's decision :)

i would say that the pre-existing organization it could be wrapped into would be the clergy of Os. Since he promotes knowledge and wisdom, and he has his clergy but also represents sages and such, he would make an excellent diety to have Mystic Theurges in his ranks.

I agree that mystic theurges would often be followers of Os, but shouldn't have to always be. It restricts all the different cool combinations you can come up with.

And I personally don't think the mystic theurge is cheezy. I think it's a great compremise prestige class. You get tons of spells but are always behind the curve in power.

Well, all our PrCs are highly customized. No generic PrCs in our setting! But it could be written such that there's an option for them to be from deities other than Os. Or, a second instance of the PrC with a different narrative tied to some other church or whatever, could also be approved.

I would make the Mystic Theurge a student of a school that is run by (but not exclusive to) Followers of Urvon. The school is dedicated to true understanding of the nature of magic, and the collection of samples of all existing spells and magical devices. Prospective students, who wish to learn the school's unique method of advanced magical study, must show some potential in both arcane and divine spellcasting, and must also present the school with a scroll containing at least one unique spell, or at least one never collected by the school (whether researched or a lucky find).

It'd have to be fleshed out, of course, but it's a lot easier to envision PCs joining a school to learn to be a Theurge, than joining some strange cult out of the blue.
