The Mystic Thurge and '+1 caster level' PrCs

I had a sudden hideous thought.

Could my Necro3/Clr3/Mystic Thurge 2/True Necromancer 10 NPC choose Mystic Thurge as the class to advance with the true necromancer's +1 caster level spell progression? AMkeing the above character cast as a Necro15/Clr15?

Pretty sure that doesn't work, actually. MT doesn't have a spellcasting progression of its own, it just advances an existing one (or ones, really) that the character had before they took the PrC. But I'd imagine that it would work for say Assassin or Blackguard or the like (heh... Ur-Priest...) where the PrC has its own spell casting do-hickey.

Not as such...

However, unless it's been updated for 3.5, I seem to remember that the True Necromancer PrC lets you stack the cleric + wizard levels for the purposes of caster level and access to certain spells (IIRC, Necromancy?)...

In which case, every level of Mystic Theurge would add 2 levels to your caster level? I think the above example has an effective caster level of 20 already - not bad for an 18th level character...?

Necro 3:Cleric 3: True Necro 2: Mystic Theurge 10 - 28th level caster! Woo!

Guess that's what you get for using a 3.0 and a 3.5 Prc on the same character! :)

Well, thank god for that.

Yeah, it stacks for necro school and death domain spells, as well as rebuke/command rolls.

That's right I think.

So the durations etc are amazing, but I don't think that's particularly overpowered. I'd be surprised if they changed the PrC much.

It would have a few side effects beyond the durations: Damage Scaling. Think most Necro spells are capped quite low - but a few I can think of could be nasty - Horrid Wilting would do 25 Dice for the above guy... although that is not earth shatteringly different - about the same as the meteor swarm a normal 18th level mage could use.

SR would not be a good defense against the True Necromancer/Theurge either. Taken to that 28 CL extreme I put there: SR 39 would offer 100% protection against an 18th level casters but only 50/50 against the True Necro.... He'd pretty much ignore SRs apt to his level. Could cause a few upsets?

Although on the flip side, it would also fit quite nicely with the True Necro concept - weaker as both a cleric or a wizard, but truly epic as a necromancer. It's also more of a 'DM class', which some might say makes it less 'problematic'.

If they spot this one, I think it'd probably get changed. Personally, I'd like to see the Theurge spell progression used for the True Necomancer. Then use character level as the caster level for necromancy spells. Although that could possibly have some funny side effects as well!

I don't buy the 'dm class' thing myself. But I don't mind PrCs that are awesome at one thing, and not super good at the others.

That'd be painful if it worked...but thankfully, it doesn't. The +1 Caster level has to add to a Class that actually gives you spells and such. Can't use it on another +1 Caster level class.

Wizards didn't make that mistake, thankfully.

Hmm - I don't think the True Necromancer is in Complete Divine - do you think it will make it into Libris Mortis?

Cheers!

Actually, I seem to remember it IS in Complete Divine...or maybe I was just seeing things on those lists.
