I watched it a bit ago. I didn't think it was bad. Wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but definitely not the worst. I haven't seen the other ones in the series though. Had to look up what the show it was based on. That's a hard show to try to look up and watch some of. The portion of the show I watched seemed to have the humor as a more dry humor type of thing rather than the more slapstick I saw in the movie.

Yes, the genre--Police Squad!, Airplane, The Naked Gun--was known for its deadpan wordplay (often delivered by Leslie Neilson), surrealism, and--of course--slapstick. Its imitators, in which I include this recent film, along with Top Secret!, Hot Shots!, Spy Hard and a dozen others (some of which even had Leslie Neilson in them, so it's not just down to the lead performer) never really 'get' what made those films work. I suspect like so many things (hi Ghostbusters!), it's a recipe of a time and a place and can't really be replicated.

The original Naked Gun movie is a stone cold classic. Though the sequels were pretty bad (something I think people might forget) so I was willing to cut this “new version” some slack. I think Morrus is right that the original just had the right recipe to be something special even the brand couldn’t replicate let alone all the imitators.
