The new 4E PDF's odd changes... [Tues PM: problem fixed]

It is not DRM. DRM requires you to log in and use it from a registered computer, etc. Copy/Paste disabling is an option on Non-DRM pdfs. A lot of art pdfs do this for you to enjoy the art onscreen but not copy it over. A few RPG pdfs did this but were because of faulty source files (such as Mystic Eye Games' Nightmares and Dreams d20 Monster book) or were quickly changed after customer outrage (Silverthorne Games' book of templates was originally this way but changed to be copy/paste enabled after customer feedback).

Also it is true. I didn't see this thread before I posted my own but you can check it out at rpgnow.com RPGNow.com - The leading source for indie RPGs check out Martial Power, Draconomicon 1, and King of the Trollhaunt Warrens, they are copy/paste disabled unlike all the others.

Basically, Copy & Paste is something _only_ PDFs can give you. If they have to sell the PDF at the full price to avoid retailer complaints (which I can understand and accept, even without liking it), they should at least ensure that they use the full capabilities of the PDF.

All of the 4e PDFs (whether copy/paste enabled or disabled) have always been 30% off the print price.

All of the 3e PDFs are 100% of the print cover price and have been except for during a few specific sales when they were 25-30% off.

This was on oversight by the etailer and will be corrected today.

A quick phone call fixed this. Did any of you contact the etailer or did you just come here and post about it? I won't always be here to solve these things folks. :p

No. DRM is disabling copy/paste.

For example, an issuer can limit the number of viewings, number of copies, which devices the media can be transferred to etc. Digital rights management often depend on cryptography and on-line activation.

Often, but not always require on-line activation, and DRM includes which device the media can be transferred to, meaning that disabling the ability to copy and paste from something IS Digital Rights Management, because you don't have the right to copy or paste, and that is being managed by the digital media itself.

Electronic books read on a personal computer or an e-book reader typically use DRM restrictions to limit copying,

Two of the most commonly used software programs to view e-books are Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Reader.[22] Each program uses a slightly different approach for Digital Rights Management (DRM). The first version of Adobe Acrobat e-book Reader to have encryption technologies was version 5.05. In the later version 6.0, the technologies of the PDF reader and the e-book reader were combined, allowing it to read both DRM-restricted and unrestricted files. [23] After opening the file, the user is able to view the rights statement, which outlines actions available for the specific document. For example, for a freely transferred PDF, printing, copying to the clipboard, and other basic functions are available to the user. However, when viewing a more highly restricted e-book, the user is unable to print the book, copy or paste selections.[24] The level of restriction is specified by the publisher or distribution agency.

Thanks for fixing it Scott, for all parties involved.

Hehheh. Good burn.

I'm thinking of getting the martial powers pdf. Has it been fixed yet? I'll probably make the purchase right after the fix is in place.

I'll check in again after I get back from a job interview.

Seriously! Where would the fun be in that?

As Scott said, it has been fixed, and you all have my apologies for any inconvenience or consternation caused.

In other news, the revised Core files are up, with the errata fully integrated. If you bought a Core book from us before, you can now freely download the version with the errata integrated in.
