The New Dungeon (#114)

All I can say is... wow. It is quite a different magazine.

The Wil Save column, IMO, was quite good and unlike other
writing I've seen in Dungeon before.

The Campaign Workbook section seems useful... Lairs with Flair
provides basic good ideas for spicing up encounters.

The layout has changed significantly....
Larger text, but more columns, more pages, and smaller margins.
The large text makes it easier to read, but the smaller columns
means very little per column line. Easier and harder to read at the
same time...

Mad God's Key and Isle of Dread both look awesome. The art is great at least. I've got to read through them a bit more to see about the adventures.

Blah blah blah... Now, that that's out of the way... The important part:
The Adventure Path. Spoilers below.

It is good. Lots of lava. Lots of destruction. You knew they had to be a little loony to be doing what they're doing. You probably didn't know just how loony...

One of them is an obsessive-compulsive who screams at the PCs, "You got me dirty! How dare you get me dirty!" as she attacks.

One of them is a paranoid freak who decided that humans were so untrustworthy, he was going to train a quasit as his apprentice. You should see how this guy attacks... He is going to annoy the hell out of a few adventuring parties. He writes things in his journal like: "I know the Fish is out for me. I know the Fish wants my power.... Sneaky Fish. Rotten Fish."

The leader of the Cagewrights is certainly uh... interesting. Let's just say he has a split personality.

Spoilers in funky spoiler text.

Cauldron is not completely destroyed... yet. But there is the possibility of
that occuring in Thirteen Cages. Even if the players do things well, a fourth of the city is going to collapse from the volcanic activity... turning the lake
at the center into a nice little waterfall. (Good thing it was evacuated...)

If the PCs foolishly destroy the Tree of Shackled Souls (something I could see plenty of the parties I have run doing), the volcano will erupt, destroying the town and most likely the PCs with it.

Why do they continue to make books and magazines designed for the distance-sight challenged people, and not for us up-close sight challenged people. Both those statements will make it harder for me to read, oh well, just have to move the magazine further from my face (my arms only so long).

On another note, can't wait for the new Dungeon, looks useful (but most of them are).
