On the one hand, it's a pretty transparent copy of 13th-century Europe and Near East.

On the other hand, it's a really good version thereof, which you don't see very often.

According to an interview with Glen Cook it's not so much supposed to be a copy of Europe as it is Europe with some changes. Northern Europe is under ice and the landbridge at madagasgar in almost intact so the mediteranian is a much smaller
