The oft forgotten familiar

I once had a player who had a character only 1 level of wizard, the rest of his levels were in barbarian and fighter, who had a hawk familiar. It had a lot of hit points and a really high BAB, wasn't terribly useful, he mostly kept it around for show but by the time he was in high level his familiar could have single handedly wiped out a small village and had killed a mid level NPC.

The utility of familiars (and other animal sidekicks) is directly proportionate to your DM's attitude towards them.

For instance, the last 3 times I played PCs with animal sidekicks, the DMs killed them. They weren't attacking- one was scouting, one was off on its own, and the last one was consumed in an area-effect attack delivered by suprise.

Thus, I don't play PCs with animal sidekicks with those DMs anymore.

Agreed, for some reason my DM doesn't like familiars much however every other type of creature side-kick is ok.

So far I've been able to use the raven for a fair bit of stuff seeing as it can actually speak common, (using it as a messenger between us and a besieged fort comes into mind), as well as delivering the odd touch buffs to party members.
