After reading the new Dragon issue, I came up with this interesting idea:

Do the classic body switch episode.

Next week, my players will find a mysterious object that they will interact with. Once they activate it's powers, they will randomly switch bodies. This will last until they do a specific task.

This idea clearly needs some fleshing out.
I am looking for the following:

What kind of item should they interact with - Crystal they break? Statue they touch? Fountain they drink form?
What should they retain? How about they keep their own Intelligence, Charisma, Wisdom, and they keep their skills based on these stats. Everything else, they get whatever the person whose body they switched had.
What task should they have to do to set things right?

What about a person or animal of some kind?

Every time they talk to the person, 1d6 minutes later they switch bodies.

Every time they touch the animal, 1d6 minutes later they switch bodies.

Or whatever... just something that will make it less than obvious about what's going on.

Magic Jar?

Well that sounds just like the good old magic jar spell.

We had such an adventure lately... the weak and old enemy archmage switched bodies with a lycanthropic fighter... Ouch that hurt as the werewolf came on us with stoneskin.

Did you see "The Fallen" with denzel Washington? How about something similar, but withthe PC. and it's involuntary. Everytime they touch someone, even thru an attack with a melee weapon, they switch with that person. In the middle of a fight, the switch bodies with thier opponent. (maybe limit it to one switch with the same person per 24 hours.) Now , they cannot finish the guy off without killing the body they were just in, wether it was thier own, or the bartender they switched with earlier in the day. Meanwhile, the people who have thier bodies now could be causing all kinds of trouble, tarnishing the PC's reputation.

Here's an idea. In the middle of combat with a major baddy and his minions, something happens, a magic globe is shattered for example, setting off this curse on all in the area. Bad guys are both comitting crimes in the PC's bodies, as well as jumping from body to body during thier plots. This could go on for quite a while. Pc's looking to reverse this curse by performing some task, as laid out in the inscription in the ancient local where this trap/curse was set off. Will make for some really interesting fights, especially if the pc's care about killing off the bodies of the innocent. When the curse is broken, people are stuck in the body they are in, so the PC's might need to track down everyone, get the right body, then finish the task without touching anyone.
