The PL 5 Future Setting - Discuss!

Roudi

First Post
According to d20 Future, Progress Level Five is the "Information Age." In short, it's our present and very near-future, in terms of technological development. Now, I've seen a lot of high-PL setting discussion on this board, but I continually find myself drawn to working with a PL 5 setting. Does anyone else here make use of the PL 5 setting? By this, I don't mean "does your campaign take place strictly in the modern real world"... since we are talking Future here, I'd expect to see at least SOME speculative technology or slight sci-fi elements.

So, folks, what have you got? Or, if PL 5 isn't your thing, what is? Let's get a good old-fashioned discussion going here.

In my Americanarchy game (which hasn't had a session in a while, darn too many campaigns going), I use elements of Darwin's World 2 which is near future...

Funny you should mention this...

Last night I started thinking about a near-Future campaign (c. 2015), and I spent a couple of hours this morning looking through d20 Future at the tech and classes I would consider:

I decided to stick with the base and advanced classes from the core rules - none of the d20F AdCs work with my campaign concept.

I need to pick through the feats list much more carefuly to see what gets under the limbo stick - so far only a few seem applicable to the game I'm contemplating.

None of the weapons and gear are too far out-of-the-question - as far as this campaign goes however, this really won't be much of an issue as the adventurers are more likely to find and use older (1970s-1990s) tech due to the setting.

There may be some early genetech stuff, particularly gene therapy if the characters find themselves exposed to radiation (which is a distinct possibility).

I think the orbital shuttle will exist, and will likely have at least an indirect influence on the game i have in mind. I'm more interested in some advanced tech for surface vehicles, so I need to dig into the mecha rules a bit more.

[Tooting of own horn begins now]
BlackHammer Firearms 2 was written purely thinking of a PL5 game... I love 'edge of tomorrow' games, or as Max Headroom put it, Twenty Minutes Into The Future... (Being an intelligent and sophisticated series, it was, of course, cancelled after one season.)

I'm an unashamed CyberPunk junky. I run cyberpunk games in a variety of settings, from classic CyberPunk with lots of cybernetics and high tech, to more Max Headroomy stuff (near future, dystopia, no major tech advances), to modern day just around the corner games.

I usually don't like the Progress levels described in the book.
So, in my near future campaign I use all the stuff I like (only weapons, and armor up toPL8-9, everything else is usually up to PL 6-7.
Since I don't use space travel in my campaign, I use only PL5 technologies for that.
So, to summarize all of it, there are mechas (as big as it can manuever), cybergear(up to PL7), and weapons(up to PL8-9 and no gadgets).
This is a kind of cyberpunkish campaign. Lots of city action.
PL5 is not my thing. I like fancy cybertech, nanotechnology, Aliens, all sort of weird stuff. Like in X-Files. If only Aliens have the technology to travel across the star systems its also fine.
Either space opera (or other space faring), or single world Future settings for me.
