"Recapping our top story: today at 3:36 am there was an explosion at the ACES military research facility outside of Gnome, Alaska. Details are still sketchy but...wait...I am getting word that the Secretary of Defense is going to speak to the press. We go live now to Washington."

"This morning one of our neutron warheads accidently detonated at the ACES research facility. So far, no lives have been lost but all base personelle are being treated for radiation poisoning. We have not yet determined what caused the accident but we believe it was a software malfunction due to old code." An aide steps into frame and whispers to the Secretary behind a manilla folder. "I'm sorry, no more questions." He says and they both depart.

"We will bring you continueing coverage of the events as they unfold. In other news today most of the west coast is still without power. What started as a malfunction in a canadian power plant caused a black out to spread to the american power grid. California has a program to deal with black outs like this one but the govenor today said that they are having unexpected problems restoreing service to customers.

In technology news a new virus is burning across the internet. Spread by email this new virus can infect a machine without the user having to even open the attachment. Webmasters are scrambleing to isolate thier servers from the rest of the network. Understandably, this is causing massive slowdowns in business both online and retail. At eleven o'clock eastern today the New York stock exchange was offically closed early to try and repair the damage caused by the virus.

In entertainment news the new documentary 'Dawn of the Mecha Age' which details the devolopment of hardsuits had record number of viewers. Critics say the series focuses too much on the military application of powered battle armor and not enough on the civilian uses such as construction work. The creator of the show says he is pleased with the success so far and looks forward to making more documentaries on new emerging technology."

OOC: I have always wanted to do a post-apocolyptic game like this. Technology isn't just broken: its evil.

Hey! You can write too!

I kinda like the idea of using The Prometheus Effect to create a post-apocolyptic game setting. Would explain the heavy use of nukes and a fall back to older technology. Sounds like the bastard child of 'Virus" and 'Terminator'...

Anybody else want to write communications, recording, news broadcasts, or other documents of the fall of mankind?

Let's call it 'Prometheus Dawn'...

Hey, if we get enough information together, I might write up a d20 modern setting based on it...

Sorry, sometimes I just get a wild hair and have to write it down. Your post about reawakening Prometheus had me imagining some hapless researching opening a box in cold storage. The project had been abandoned when it was determined that it was too dangerous to continue. Everything was destroyed except for a small sample of P-matter kept at near absolute zero temperature. The whole things was classified and swept under the rug. All records were erased and after who knows how long it was forgotten. Until someone opened the box (shades of pandora here).

I was thinking about how humans could fight Prometheus. One way could be Psionics. Perhaps though genetic engineering or just harnessing latent ability some people could have enough power to make a difference.

Another way would be to turn Prometheus against itself. Techno-organic matter may behave in some ways like organic matter. To that end it would be possible to give P-matter cancer. These cancerous P-masses would have all the abilities of Prometheus but be inimical to its existance.

In the bleak future two major groups exist. One of them lives completely without technology any more complicated simple machines. They farm and live very much like thier ancestors did in ages past. The Psionic guardians of these lands style themselves as wizards. They are the keepers of ancient lore and it only through thier gifts that the terrible metal monsters which roam the wilds are kept at bay. Except for the highest levels of the Order no one even knows what happened. As far as peasants are concerned it has always been like this.

The other group lives among the wreckage of a great city. The scientist here have learned how to capture and turn Prometheus hunter-killers into defenders of humanity. The only downside is that these machines are wild. A human pilot is needed to keep them from running amok. Candidates are chosen carefully as they bond with the mecha for life. The mecha will take no other pilots and if the pilot dies it is neccesary to destroy the mecha. Pilots don't so much as control a mecha as they direct it. Mecha want to fight and kill but they do so with only animalistic instincts.
