I voted for Larry Elmore...post asked for Quintessential D&D artist...not the best D&D artist.

And besides all of that, Elmore is good.

Man this was a hard one. But...I had to go with good old Larry Elmore. Don't get me wrong, I love the new art, very comic book like. But I don't think D&D can be summed up by one anything, artist or other definitive. I went to gen con for the first year this and I have been gaming for about 8 years. I never really realized just how big the game(rpg) had become. But I digress. The original covers for the Dragonlance still give me goose-bumps to this day. If nothing he is the Dragonlance artist. All hail to Elmore

EROL OTUS!!!!

Gawd dammit, man, Erol Otus is the DEFINITION of "D&D art". I only wish the D20 thing had somehow lured him out of retirement like it did a lot of the other old hands.

couldn't say it better myself.

I can't vote...

For me it's not so much specific artists, as specific illustrations.

Oh... If anyone wants to see a good example of Sam Woods' work, take a peek at the SW Alien Anthology. He did the vast majority of the alien (no creatures) illustrations. For how silly some the verbal descriptions of the aliens are, he made them look quite good. A few examples from the Wizards web-site...
