The Ring of Dragonshape

Yeah. The ring doesn't cast polymorph, because then you'd be allowed to pick any shape (up to the usual HD limit, for the usual duration). Instead, it gives you one shape, for the duration listed.

The ring wants you to choose a side. Choose good! Do it for great justice!

While to create the ring requires a caster level of 7, it does not nessecarily follow that the power of the rings comes AT CL7.

Take the Bottle of Air: CL7 but instead of limited to 14 hours, has a continuous air supply.
Actually, creating the ring requires Caster Level 12th, but not because of the listed CL of 7, which isn't a prerequisite.

You can voluntarily lower your CL when creating items, down to the minimum required to cast the prerequisite spells. So in this case, the ring has a CL of 7, despite requiring Forge Ring (and thus CL 12).

(Which I suspect you knew already.)

Everything you said in the above is true :D

It says young red dragon or young gold dragon. That's pretty clear. It says nothing of wyrmling.

Besides, its effect isn't a polymorth at 7th level, it works like polymorph (in that it transforms you into something else) and if you want to dispel that effect, it will be as hard as if it was a spell cast by 7th-level caster.

If balance is an issue, remember that you don't get all abilities, as it still works like polymorph. No supernatural or spell-like abilities: No breath weapon, no magic.
