The Scarab of Al Sulak.

I'm Ray...of Enfeeblement
Hi everyone.

My party is now getting to the level, (11th on average) where we are starting to amass some decent wealth and obtain some good equipment.

I've been wanting now for some time to create an item/s that's unique for my character and very shortly I should have the money for it, (we've nearly finished this campaign).

I've had an idea of the first thing I want to do and just wanted to run it by you people for a few reasons:

1. Is it correctly costed?
2. What do you think of it?

I was also wondering if any of you lot have had the chance to create something for your characters that gave them a bit more flavor and made them stood out in your campaigns a bit more? If you have then please post 'em.

So here it is........

The Scarab of Al Sulak

The Paladin of Raziel, Reliq Al Sulak, had this magical piece of jewellery crafted in memory of his ancestors, and their legendary powers, from times long since past.

This beetle shaped brooch is fashioned from a very rare white gold known only to the isolationist Elves that created it. The legs and antennae have been finely sculpted from ivory and are pinned with mithral, allowing a modicum of movement in its seemingly fragile joints. Ivory inlay also makes up the designs that have been meticulously etched into its back. Finally its eyes, of which there are six, are highly polished, very fine pearls, harvested from the mouths of miniature oysters.

Reliq's nomadic ancestors were a people of great fortitude and this is reflected in the scarabs myriad powers:

1. Acts as a Periapt of wound closure.
2. +4 Con as per Amulet of Health.
3. Immunity to poison as per the Periapt.
4. +2 ? bonus to AC.
5. Heal 1/day.

So I figured the cost of this as, (using the Periapt of Proof vs Poison as the base item):

1. PoPAP - 27000
2. Heal 1/day - 23760
3. AoH +4 - 16000
4. PoWC - 15000
5. AC +2 - 10000

Multiply numbers 2 - 5 by 1.5 and add number 1 to give you a total of 124140gps, yes?

Yep, that's how it works. Just multiply all but the highest different abilities by 1.5 and add them together. However, you also have to keep in mind the body slot affinity for each individual ability, but these all look fine for an amulet.

I'd probably make the AC bonus a natural armor bonus, judging from the fluff, this would of course lower the cost for this part to 8,000gp.

Thanks Thanee, natural armour seems like better choice.

I was wondering what the extra cost would be to make the heal ability a free action like the haste ability of mithral full plate of speed?

Any ideas?

Quickened Haste is a 7th level spell (Haste/3 + Quicken/4) so it's castable by a non-epic spellcaster.

Quickened Heal is a 10th level spell (Heal/6 + Quicken/4), so you would need a 10th level spell slot to cast it, and thus be epic.

Personally, if I could offer some advice - I'd ditch the heal component entirely. The item is cool, but having items with Heal tends to quickly throw things out of whack. Speaking from personal experience. As an alternate suggestion, may I reccoment maybe putting Favor of Illmater on it instead? It's not a heal, granted, but it fits with the whole Legendary Fortitude theme that you're going for.

Also, haste is a bit of a exception here, since it can be activated for one round at a time, if it would require a standard action, it would be kinda useless to activate it for one round only. And it only affects the wearer, not one target per level as normal.

And as we noticed recently... boots of speeds are kinda hard to activate on horseback. :p

Gotcha.

Where might I find this Favored of Illmater? Is it outta Forgotten Realms?
