So, I originally came up with this one when trying to do a Generalist wizard. I was having trouble coming up with abilities that wouldn't make it a Lore wizard, and kick the sorcerer in the teeth. Eventually I had the bright idea of giving it Magical Secrets, and then it kind of grew into this. I think a wizard that studies other spellcasters is an interesting concepts, and I went with it. I did consider making Quick Imitation a 2nd level ability, but it seemed a might powerful for that, so I kept it to Minor Emulation. I'm not too happy with Arcane Invocations as a capstone, but I was having trouble coming up with something else, and I thought it fit thematically. Well, here it is.
[h=1]Arcane Expertise[/h]At 2nd level, understanding other magics requires in depth understanding of your own. You gain proficiency with the Arcana skill if you haven’t already, and you double your proficiency bonus for any Intelligence (Arcana) checks you make.
[h=1]Minor Emulation[/h]By 2nd level, you have already learned a few scraps of foreign magic. You learn one cantrip of your choice from any spell list. It counts as a Wizard cantrip for you, and it does not count against the number of cantrips you can know.
[h=1]Quick Imitation[/h]By 6th level, you have learned to study the movements of other spellcasters quickly, and copy their actions just as fast. When a spellcaster that you can see casts a spell of a level you can cast, you may use your reaction to make an Intelligence (Arcana) check. The DC equals 10 + the spells level. On a success, you may cast that spell using one of your own spell slots on your next turn, and only your next turn.
Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can do so again.
[h=1]Magical Secrets[/h]At 10th level, you have gained more knowledge of other magics. You may choose two spells from any spell list, including this one. The spells must be of a level you can cast, and cannot be a cantrip.
The chosen spells count as Wizard spells for you.
[h=1]Arcane Invocations[/h]By 14th level, you have mastered an ability of the Warlocks’; invocations. You gain two invocations from the Warlock class. You cannot choose invocations that have a pact boon prerequisite, and must meet the prerequisites for others.
Wizard: School of Emulation
All wizards carry with them a curiosity, for some, it leads them to study certain schools of magic. For others, it encourages them to mix magic with martial prowess, and for some still, it leads them to the fields of war. Wizards of Emulation chase after the magics that many wizards find themselves unable to access. They study the ways and traditions of other spellcasters, in hopes of being able to practice them themselves. Emulationists follow many paths, but for all of them, the more knowledge, the merrier.[h=1]Arcane Expertise[/h]At 2nd level, understanding other magics requires in depth understanding of your own.
