Air,

They killed Kyuss in one ROUND?! Dude, I'd like to see what dice THEY were using...

Not one round. One ACTION. The archmage was apparently cheesed to the max.

IIRC, the plot involved somehow using the sphere of annihilation (not sure how he activated it) to reduce Kyuss' hp by half beforehand, followed by using a greater metamagic rod of maximize spell to cast maximized time stop, followed by two maximized delayed blast fireballs, and three empowered delayed blast fireballs, all with altered energy via the archmage ability to deal sonic damage. Spell resistance was no problem as the archmage had spell power (+4), spell penetration, and greater spell penetration, a dusty rose prism ioun stone, and something else (maybe bead of karma?), so with a few lucky rolls, 4 of the five DBFs bypassed his SR, including both maximized ones.

Another (theoretical) way to do it I saw over on the Paizo boards involved a druid prepping four maximized fire seeds and giving them to the ranger ahead of time who has the rod of seven parts. The wizard used the sphere of annihilation to drop his hp by half followed by the ranger who whacks kyuss with a full attack of four maximized fire seeds.

Alright I misrecalled something. Here is the thread I was thinking of, but it was not the exact scenario I described. This was a group of players using core rules only to fight Dragotha, not Kyuss, and it took them 5 rounds, but it wasn't tough for them.

I was apparently simultaneously thinking of this thread when I was thinking of the one-action kill. However that DM was allowed Arcana Unearthed so obviously not a typical game. I believe in my mind I had somehow meshed the two. Still, impressive nonetheless. And the druid tactic still works.

It sounded pretty tough to me - the Cleric basically spent the entire combat healing his group! And I don't think he was handling touch ACs properly. :)

That said, if you've got powergamers like that, who are going to try to eek out every bit of power available to them, you're either going to have to reign them in or deal with problems like that.

Luckily my group is a lot more laid back than that. :)

Hopefully that won't happen with my new group. I got one artificer, one wizard and one...something else. Whatever isn't there (fighter or cleric) will get filled by an NPC slot. Or not. ;)
