The Shining South

Where there is overlap with Serpent Kingdoms, are the SK locations marked on the maps?

I haven't gone through everything, but I do see Lapaliiya, Sheirtalar, and the Dun Hills (described in Serpent Kingdoms) on the Shining South map on pg 156 (The Shaar). The Bandit Wastes, Lushpool, Lapelgard, and Ithmong also appear on the map on pg 125. If any other maps overlap areas in SK, they'll probably also show up.

I'll probably get it in a week or two. It looks quite nice from my perusal at the store, but I was getting Libris Mortis and two other books, so I figured I'd spread the pain out.

Thanks for checking. Just looked at the art gallery -- this book looks better and better.

No, I think it's a screw up.

There's a lot of screw up:
Those two pics are supposed to be Halruaan Elders:

Well, I think it's pretty obvious the horse one isn't.

Those three pics are supposed to be Beguilers:
84351.jpg
84347.jpg
84366.jpg

One could assume the Beguiler is the first, and that it's a Prestige Class.

But in the AD&D2e Monster Compendium 11, we have:
The beguiler is a plump quadruped about the size of a small dog. Somewhat mouse-like in appearance, it has large glistening black eyes, large ears, and a pointed snout. It is covered with thick, bluish-black fur that is silky to the touch. The creature can change its fur color to match its surroundings. When properly cured, the beguiler’s hide commands high prices in any marketplace.

Beguilers possess razor-sharp retractile claws, enabling the creatures to climb trees and wooden structures with ease. The hairless, prehensile tail of the beguiler aids in climbing, and can be used to throw or wield weapons the size of a short sword or smaller.

Habitat/Society: The beguiler lives in the dry plains or steppes of the Eastern Shaar. Dampness suppresses the creature’s ability to camouflage itself which it can do for 1-4 turns. Unless the creature’s fur is dry, it is incapable of this coloration change. In regions of Toril other than the Eastern Shaar, the beguiler is very rare.

Those two pictures are supposedly of Guardians of the Dwarf Crypt:

Obviously, one of the two is wrong.

What do we have in terms of new races? Are there some presented in the style of PC races near the beginning of the book, like Underdark? Which are they?

I see from the gallery that the Thri-Kreen have a presence in FR that I was unaware of. Do they get writeups yet again? Somebody at WotC must really love those suckers.

Let me give you the correct titles for these pictures:

#1 illustrates a new regional feat, Ankheg Tribe Ambush.

#2 is the Halruaan Elder PrC.

#3 is the Halruuan Magehound PrC.

#4 is the Crinti Shadow Maruader PrC.

#5 is the Beguiler, a new monster.

#6 the Guardian of the Crypt of Rindorn Starhelm, a Mantimera Zombie. (Mantimeras are another new monster in the book).

#7 is the Great Rift Deep Defender, a new PrC.

The Loxo.

Shudder...

If there's a reason I would not buy this book, the Loxos are it.
If it's any consolation, they are extremely powerful and expensive. They begin with 5 Monstrous Humanoid HD and a +2 level adjustment, meaning a 1st lvl Loxo counts as an 8th lvl character. Very few players will take such a deal, IMHO, leaving the Loxo to be most often found as NPCs...

If you wanted to remove the Loxo completely, it shouldn't be hard... they only have 3 pages total dedicated to them: 1 1/2 page each in the Player Races section and monsters section.
