I just finished reading this.

I always remembered a nugget at the back of my head that a lot of the original dnd monsters were essential "shreddies monsters" that were found in cereal.

This blog entry says it was more collecting small rubber monster packs.

Can I confirm which one is more accurate and why?

Which monsters were essentially inspired by toys?

AFAIK, they were from a pack of dollar-store type "prehistoric animals". It included what we know today as the bulette, the owlbear, the rust monster, the hook horror. There might be more. I never heard of the shreddies toys, but I did own the pack. I wish I kept it...
