It's become a Thanksgiving tradition in my family to pop in "A Christmas Story" after everyone's finished with the meal. Kind of a way to usher in the Christmas season (plus it's my wife's all-time favorite movie, I think).

A quick question: has anyone ever seen the sequel to "A Christmas Story?" It was made years after the original so the actors are all different, but they do a pretty good job of it (Ralphie's dad does a good job of emulating Darren McGavin). Unfortunately, my wife and I stumbled across it halfway through by flipping through the TV channels one day, so I have no idea what it was called. It took place during summer vacation, and Ralphie wanted a set of battling Chinese tops that ended up falling into a sewer drain. Oh, and the neighbors, the Bumpkises, played a bigger role.

Can anyone tell me the name of the sequel? I'd love to pick it up for my wife and surprise her this Christmas.

It Runs in the Family

Charles Grodin took over Darren McGavin's role and two Culkins took over the kid's roles.

The only one I know of is 'Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss', about the family's annual summer vacation. It takes place a few years later (Ralphie gets a summer job at one point).

A quick check of IMDB finds the following:

Great American Fourth of July, and Other Disasters: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0084022/
(interestingly enough, this came out a year before A Christmas Story, and features Matt Dillon as Ralph! )

And in 1994, there was: It Runs in the Family (also titled My Summer Story), with Kieran Culkin as Ralph, Mary Steenburgen as his mom, and Charles Grodin as his dad.

From viewer comments, it looks like this is the one you saw (it mentions the chinese tops)

Thanks, JoeBlank, Kestrel, and dravot! Looks like I've got some DVD hunting to do. I can't wait to see the look on my wife's face when she sees these!

Oh yeah... I saw the line and remembering if fondly, as it's one of my few family traditions around Christmas, I had to check the thread just cause of it.

Wow! This is also one of my family's traditions. Every christmas we gather around the TV and watch this fantastic movie. We've been doing this for as long as I can remember. I think its wonderful that someone else does this as well. Cheers to you Brother Shatterstone!

edit - idiocy

Too many OT threads in Meta means that some of them get shut down or moved. Since this is at least peripherally connected to a movie, I've slid it over to the Movie forum.

Yeah, I know it's a stretch, but there you have it. :P

I knew this was coming out sometime ago, I think previews, and I so wanted it. My wife, who's in charge of the decorating, used her veto power on me... :(
Dude, that's what gifts from brothers, uncles, and/or friends are for! :D
