The Spellplague - what do we know/speculate about it?

I've got a GM friend who's a hard-core FR fan, but doesn't read messageboards that much, so I'm trying to find information for him. What's the sum of knowledge about this spell plague?

Not much officially beyond what little there is in the Grand History of the Realms.
SPOILERS BELOW (no black space since the entire topic is, by nature, a spoiler)

Here's what I know:

In the year 1385, the Spellplague was catalyzed by the murder of Mystra in Dweomerheart by Cyric and Shar. This caused the Dweomerheart and Savrras (god of divination) to be destroyed. Azuth (god of wizardry) and Velsharoon (god of necromancy) were tossed out into the Astral Plane. (The sentence on this implies, but does not state, that these two gods are somehow lost). This event causes the Weave to be unmade and magic goes wild. The skies burn azure and thousands of wizards die or go insane.

What happens after this or how magic comes back under control (in, presumably, the new form of 4e magic) is unknown. The new Drizz't book the Orc King has parts that take place 100 years in the 'future' and suggest that Thay and Mulhorand are in grave troubles.

What FourthBear said. There's more than just the Spellplague going on though. The Orc King's teaser chapter suggests a lot more stuff that I think your friend will be interested. There are references to the rise/return of Netheril (under the Shades), the "merging of two worlds" (no idea what that means) and the coming of the Aboleths. You should make sure your friend reads that chapter.

Anyone else getting a Robert Jordan vibe here? This sounds a lot like the tainting of Saidin and the end of the Age of Legends.

I wonder how much of this is covered in the final adventure in the Weave trilogy (Anauroch:Sundering of the World - or is it Empire of Shade now?) coming out next month...

I'm not too worried that they'll somehow wipe out Thay. It's one of the popular and iconic areas in the Realms. Not only do they feature prominently in each editions of the Realms, they are often used in the computer games based there. I figure at worst, they have Thay in the middle of an all-out civil war. What I wonder is more about what happens to Mulhorand. The game designers may decide that they don't like having "Egypt-Land" right out of Disney's Epcot center smack in the middle of the Realms. While I like Mulhorand, I know that a number of people dislike that the most ancient continuing human empire in the Realms is Ancient Egypt. Heck, the serial numbers aren't even well filed off. If any of the current lands get a massive remake, I'll guessing it will be Mulhorand.

Probably. The thing with Thay is that the "8 Master specialist Wizards" thing they have going on is probably completely incompatible with the new wizard class. Even their signature prestige class is going to be Kaput using it's current theme. Thay is going to have to be heavily reworked just to fit the new rules.
