The Tarrasque

It's unkillable, apparently - but you can knock it out. So what happens if you chop it up into little bits? Grind it into a fine powder?

A related and more general question: how far does Regeneration go? If I chop off a troll's head, does it grow back?

Time to go fishin'! That is a mighty fine can o' worms you got there, should bring in some big ones. :)

[Some people are going to say it suffocates to death, others will say it breathes through its neck. And they could very well argue this point for 10 pages. ;)]

I'm pretty certain that Regeneration makes all weapons (aside from what they are vulnerable to) do subdual damage. So, can you chop a critter into tiny bits with a weapon that only does subdual damage? Chopping off the head sounds like a CdG attack. Can you CdG with a weapon that only deals subdual?

You cannot coup de grace with a weapon that does non-lethal damage. The damage must be lethal damage.

A simple coup de grace does not behead victims. Ruling as such would mean that anyone CdGed would not be affected by a Raise Dead spell, and is a dangerous path to go down.

The simplest RAW way to chop off a head is vorpal, which should work on the troll.

Our party were once hired to collect some trolls for a wizard to use in his experiments.

I suggested the following plan, and it worked well for us.

Buy a large, flat-bed wagon made of wood.
Buy mallets and iron spikes with large 'heads'.
Go to a swampish area with trolls.
Lure in a single troll, if possible. (our druid did this by shapechanging into a tempting, fat rabbit)
Beat the troll into submission using non-fire/non-acid weapons.
Drag the troll up onto the flat-bed.
Nail him down.

rinse/repeat.

We brought back 12 of them I think. It was a nice reward.

Why do you want to kill everything? I can think of much worse...

edit: this strategy may not work so well with a tarrasque...dur

The tarrasque can be slain only by raising its nonlethal damage total to its full normal hit points +10 (or 868 hit points) and using a wish or miracle spell to keep it dead.

so sayeth the srd...

You cannot cut bits off them, unless you have a weapon, which can actually wound them. You'll just bruise them otherwise.

As far as i would play it, There just is a central piece, where it all regrow from...
To stop a "eat all you can buffet" of endless troll meat, you could houserule, that the other pieced rott pretty fast...

Acid (such as that found in any person's stomach) does full, normal damage to trolls. Any bit you eat doesn't grow back.
