Description:

An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is suddenly disrupted by the arrival of a husky, pursued by two Norwegians in a helicopter. The Norwegians fire indiscriminately at the dog. The team members defend themselves and shoot back, killing the Norwegians.

It doesn't take long before the Thing (in dog form) attacks the team. One by one, they are picked off and replaced by Thing duplicates.

As the expedition explores the Norwegian camp, the history of the Thing comes together. Centuries ago - an alien spaceship had crash-landed in the Antarctic. The pilot was thrown clear and eventually froze in the ice. But the Norwegians uncovered it. And then they thawed it out.

The Thing is a cellular colony that imitates other beings. It has the ability to alter its own cell structure to that of a consumed organism, and can thus imitate a victim almost perfectly.

If the Thing were to ever reach civilization, it could replicate so quickly that in a matter of days, it would duplicate every living being on Earth. It's up to the PCs to stop it...before the Thing stops them.

The Thing: Who Goes There? is a supplement for D20 Modern that contains five advanced classes, lots of equipment, rules for fear and trust, hazards, and seven Thing variants.

D'oh!

I've updated the page. Reload and it should work fine (had it named "thething.pdf" vs. "thing.pdf").

Thanks for the catch!

I have never seen The Thing and know very little about it. I was curious to know if you had seen the star Doppelganger from the D20 Menace Manual. It struck me as being very Thing-like, and was even said to be discovered during an expedition to Antarctica.

If anyone here plays the Unreal Tournament mod Infiltration, a map inspired by The Thing can be found at RealMaps

BTW: version 2.9 of Infiltration just went gold.

I think the star doppleganger was based on The Thing.

Absolutely. I had JUSt made the post, then went to the bookstore, looked at the Menace Manual for the first time and lo and behold, there was the "official" rules for the Thing.

So in short, you don't even need my rules. Just use the Star Doppleganger. It's so close that the only thing missing is the name.

Hopefully, the other stuff (rules on fear and trust and the advanced classes) are still useful.

P.S. If you haven't seen John Carpenter's "The Thing" you really should. It's an amazing, disgusting movie.

Talien, have you ever thought about doing a supplement for another John Carpenter classic? By that I mean, They Live? Perferably useable with Spycraft as well (because I run that system more than d20 Modern).

Hiya Dave...

I was just thinking about They Live yesterday. Yeah, I might do it.

Would I do it for Spycraft? Well, for one, the differences are rather small. At least, in terms of a campaign supplement, most of the stuff from D20 Modern can be easily used with Spycraft. Okay, so the advanced classes won't be as useful, but the other stuff, like bad guy stats, should be applicable.

Secondly, Spycraft is not entirely OGL. To make something compatible with Spycraft requires a license. I've got published work coming out for Spycraft and I don't want to violate any license agreements (that'd be Combat Missions, coming out in March 2004). D20 Modern is wide open, Spycraft is not -- you have to get special permission to make it fully compatible.

So nope, won't be doing that any time soon. I think the D20 Modern compatibility is enough. My brother-in-law is using the Evil Dead supplement for his D&D campaign and it works just fine.

I figured it was, that's why I posted. I just didn't want to make any assumumptions.

Your stuff is as close as I care to get to seeing the movie. Scary I don't mind, but I don't like disgusting stuff. It sticks with me...
