the thought, problem and question

The Thought: I would like to try this. (Although what this is exactly I'm not completely sure: IC - InternetChat?; OOC - ?)

The Problem: I moved overseas a few years ago and have almost no materials with me. I have some dice, SLA Industries Rule book and some free PDF stuff (Dominion Rules and Active Exploits). I am reasonably familier with AD&D, CyberPunk, Vampire, WHFRP, Boot Hill, Traveller (in the little black books), having played and GM'ed them for a number of years. But I couldn't quote anything chapter and verse, nor tell you the duration of a Dancing Lights spell.

The Question? Is it doable?

Sure, it's totally doable. There are lots of people here who are great with helping out. Knowing the rules isn't really important, as long as you've got the basics of role-playing covered. There are plenty of game-masters who will handle a lot (or all) of the rules-stuff for you, so the player can concentrate on the story.

Also, most of the games here are run in the D20 system. This system is also the basis for D&D. The good thing is that most of the rules of the d20 system are available for free. Check here:
http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=srd

It's called the System Reference Document and contains everything you would need to create a D&D character. There's something similar for D20Modern, which is for roleplay in the 'now'.

If you're feeling ready to try something, just make a post here saying what kind of genre you're looking for, or watch out for any thread with the [Recruitment] tag.

(IC : In Character, whatever goes on in the game
OOC: Out of Character, everything else.)

I hope this was helpful. Don't hesitate to ask more questions. I hope you'll have a good time here. Welcome. :)

BTW, Doghead, if you're looking for a good place to start, I've been noticing a couple newcomers wanting games, so I just started the "Newbies Only" thread on this forum, to collect new PBP'ers for a game just for them(You).

BTW another thing if you haven't noticed it yet.. Most of the OOC stuff happens here in 'talking the talk' and the playing's over at "playing the game'.

The rest of the site is basically just a normal (though Roleplay/Sci-fi+Fantasy themed) message board, but these two forums are for gaming.
