This is one of the oldest myths of 3e D&D. It was never true. In reality, you get virtually none of the advantages of the Druid class. Animal companions are not the bulk of what Druids are about. Nor is entangle, a spell that only functions if your opponant is standing in nor near pre-existing plants.
Druids are primarily about the versitility and uniqueness of their spells, and wildshaping. The Animal and Plant domains are extremely weak compared to those abilities. In fact, you would be closer to a Ranger (who also gets animal companions and a few animal and plant spells) than a Druid with those domains.
