The "Ultimate" Eldritch Blast??

(Warlock 16/Binder 1/Hellfire Warlock 3) is what you want to aim for.

8d6 Eldritch Blast + 6d6 Hellfire Blast. That piddly "-1 Constitution everytime you use this ability" is negated by the Binder level, which you use the Visage that grants you Fast Healing Ability Scores 1 (heals on point of ability damage each round). Just get an odd numbered Con, then blast away every round for 14d6 + 2 Negative Levels in a 20' radius burst; since Hellfire Blast doesn't specifically say it's an Essence invocation, you can layer it with Utterdark Blast.

Get Quicken Spell-Like Ability, Empower Spell-Like Ability and Maximize Spell-Like Ability for more sickitude.

Get a Greater Chausible of Fell Power (+2d6 Eldritch Blast) and a Warlock's Septre (+2 to hit, +1d6 per charge spent [max 5 charges per day], 50 charges); for a truly sick 189 damage +2 Negative levels and an additional 16d6 + 2 Negative Levels in one round to everything within 20' of a spot you designate.

Warlocks are fun, but dangerous.

That said... rays are best when they hit, so I would take Weapon Focus (ray). Blast shape incantations can turn it into a saving throw situation, but I would not normally recommend that... evasion, or a decent save with resistance, can severely hamper your ability to touch some opponents.
Rays are also nice when they crit, but improved crit would have to wait until you have +8 bab. (12'th level?)

I can't remember the exact details but there's also the Mortalbane feat from Book of Vile Darkness. If memory serves, it adds 2d6 to your eldritch blast against living targets 5 times per day. And although it's in the BoVD, it's not a [Vile] or [Evil] feat.

Late along the line a warlocks can get a Invocation that can bane his Elderic blast adding 2d6 for one creature type. My warlock which will start at level one tomorrow is a sniper with Elderic spear. It keeps you out of harms way. At 6th you can get quicken to fire off a couple more sniper shots, which helps.

Mortalbane can also be taken more than once to up the #/day. 2-3 times and you're good. The downside to mortalbane is that if you hit an outsider or undead with it... you instead deal half damage with your Eldritch Blast

Another oddball feat for Warlocks: Psionic Shot and Greater Psionic Shot. You might have to suck up a lvl of Soulknife or perhaps just take Wild Talent to make this work.

A good way to increase eldritch blast damage is the Psionic Shot feat chain. Its rather feat-intensive (requiring Psionic Meditation, Psionic Shot, and Greater Psionic Shot), but it adds +4d6 points of damage to your blast.

I played a Xeph warlock using those feats, and he was reasonably effective. When combined with his chasuble of fell power, he was dealing 11d6 damage per blast at 10th level, which isn't bad at all.

I would have to look at the source again so this is off the record:

Mortalbane (Feat, BoVD) +2d6
Bimstone blast (Invo, CA) +2d6
Eldric bane (Invo, CM) +2d6
Elderic staff (Magic weapon, 2 charges, CA) +2d6

At 6th level with a base elderic blast of 3d6 you can add another 8d6 for 11d6 total.

The only problem is Eldric bane requires you to pick a type of creature for it to work against, the staff, (Not sure on the exact name) has 50 charges so there is some limited use, and brimestone blast has a reflex to take none.

The bane problem can be potentially fixed with 2 levels of cameleon (Bonus Feat).

You can switch the bane 1/day. The added benift is that this works very well with Warlock 13, as it also opens up every magic item creation feat @ character level 15.

These books all have either invocations, feats, alternate class features or prestige classes.

Complete Arcane
Complete Mage
Dragon Magic

Feats to seriously consider:
spell penetration
greater spell penetration

Invocations:
All shape invocations
Penetrating Blast (Dragon Magic): greater essence invocation gives +4 on CL checks to overcome SR and an additional effect.

Prestige Classes:
Eldritch Theurge = Warlock + Sorcerer or Wizard ( I am playing one now....i love it!)
Edlritch Desciple = Warlock + Cleric
