The worst nightmare for gnomish parents...

She had a nice long unpronounceable name, which was rapidly shortened to Bimp Breakthing ... alas she so desperately wanted to be a tinker gnome!

Gnomish names should, above all else, be fun for the players. Let me see, what Gnomes can I remember?

Derval Dirtbuster came to mind first.

And how about the "adventurer" (read thief) named Bozz, who liked to be called Indy? People naturally asked if Indy was short for Indiana (Indiana Gnomes? *groan*), and he replied that it was short for "In deep" which also described a typical situation for him...

Dang! Other than those two, I'm drawing a blank. And Gnomes are among my favorite PCs.

Assign real-world nations/languages to the races...

Ok, Gnomes definitely have the weird names going on, but
if we take a starting point of:

Dwarves = German
Elves = French
Humans = British

From there we can reference the sample names in the PHB.

Continuing the race = specific nation in Europe trend,

Halflings = Spanish
Gnomes = Italian (Take a look at the art for Gimble in 3.5)
Half-Elves = result of the Normans conquering England in 1066 :-)

Orcs, like many hostile humanoids, infest all areas, so Half-Orcs
may be found in significant numbers anywhere.

So, I'd give Gnomes long, Italian names. The Gnomish names people have suggested in this thread would simply be Common translations from Gnomish.

(Ooh. Scary thought. The Gnomish Mafia!)

:p Quimby Shoddywick is my current gnome illusionist.

:D Ingledink Humperbuntz was an effeminate gnomish bard NPC in one of my games. He was fond of saying, "Its a silent tee.";)

When I think of gnome names, I think of the ludicris! My first gnome character was named Snumpkin "Tiddlywinks" Nackle.

Just think of something silly. :D

Or something that sounds really sissy. I bet you were looking for more help than this, but gnomes are dead to me, and who names the dead?

I kind of like a celtic or gaelic feel to gnomish names.
My gnomish druid's name was Dynan Oddcub o' Fintain Gilla Finnliath mac Crimthain. (After he shortened it a bit to aid in dealing with the less verbose races. But they all called him "O.C") He was eaten by an umber hulk last night. :(
