Theories?

G'day

A decent encyclopaedia should give you articles on Phlogiston Theory and the Theory of the Four Humours. It might also be a good idea to look up Paracelsus and Dr John Dee.

One should hesitate to put the "Gaia Hypotesis" on this list. In it's essence, it's the idea that in some ways one can treat the planet as an organism, with many interrelated, interlinked mechanisms and reactions that help keep it balanced and running. While taking it as literal truth is a debatable step, it's usefulness as analogy is still fairly sound.

Phantom limb pain was shown to be cured through the use of a mirror box. The patient sticks the limb they do have into the box, and does stuff like clenching and unclenching. They see the reflection in the mirror, and it looks like their other limb is doing the same. Thus the eyes trick the brain, and the pain stops.

Acupuncture does have scientific validity as a form of massage

Homeopathy also has some scientific validity if viewed purely as 'Herbal remedies' - science just goes about isolating the active ingredient

Ghosts etc have not actually been disproved (they just have not been proved)

spontaneous generation....
Huh? That's a proven scientific fact. You see, the universe expands constantly, right? So, to maintain density, new matter is constantly created. Most of that is hydrogen, but something heavier appears every now and then. Ever wondered why you always clean dust even though noone puts it back on the cupboard? Or why you're cleaning your room and you keep finding trinkets which you can't remember ever seeing? That's because they didn't exist until some days ago. :D

There's a theory stating that this applies to hard disk files too (ever found in the recesses of a forgotten partition a directory named "sjhv32" with a DOS program with no documentation that apparently does nothing save displaying an error message?).

Homeopathy is a system of medical treatment based on the use of minute quantities of remedies that in massive doses produce effects similar to those of the disease being treated.
