What would be so bad about compiling an errata sheet every year (say for release at GenCon) and sell hardcopies of it for maybe $2 and have the pdf download on the website

Nothing bad at all, if they release on that schedule.

Then you can advertise your game as "D&D 2009" and everyone will understand what you mean.

My point is just that they need to think up a way to consistently label revisions.

Is there a lot more development time and playtesting going towards 4E than there was for 3e (a whole, whole, whole lot more)? Cause if not...sure 3.5E was a pain, but it's tough to argue that it didn't improve the game. And that was 3 years after the fact.

Maybe they'll release errata patches for the Insider books, instead. But then that would a) invalidate the "you don't need to subscribe to D&D Insider" theory, and b) not help the paper books at all.

Actually, one can read that statement like "We are already working on 4.5E". But I still want to belive they do not want to do .5 revision unless it will be necessary. Necessary means Hasbro would need to milk more money from us. Well... as long as the game is good, I don't care about a bit of milking. We will see with 4E whether there is reason to bother with future...

Which given the previous statement "We're not working on 4E." from WotC, means that the statement is absolutely worthless at best, or a complete and utter lie. How on earth, can someone go out there with a straight face and say this, to the fans?

So why make such an obviously false statement in the first place, knowing that in all likelihood, they'll have to recant?

I believe them when they say that there won't be a D&D 4.5, I really do. And the reason why I believe them is because forcing people to buy official game patches through D&D Insider is a much more profitable idea.

sure 3.5E was a pain, but it's tough to argue that it didn't improve the game.

it's really easy for me to argue that 3.5 didn't improve the game, because it made the game worse for me in a lot of ways. I could have lived without a few guys' house rules becoming the guidelines for every D&D game I've joined since. (options not restrictions, my left isle of langerham....)

So what if he did? I won't change a thing if, four years from now, Hasbro says 'we need a new revenue stream from you in fourth quarter'. Plans change, they change all the time and in ways that many times are not under our control. If you take anything - especially stuff said at this early date - as a promise you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I agree with this. Also. WotC can't "milk" anyone. Its not like the government raising your taxes. You have a choice, buy or don't buy, and as always "let the buyer beware". A regime change in WotC could possibly lead to a .5 edition is if Scott says otherwise. However, there's no garuntee of it happening either. Best plan is to wait and see.

They could also avoid 4.5 by creating a 4.5 and just calling it 5th edition. They could even push its covertability factor if it's similar enough to 4ed.
