There's arachnids in them thar forests.

First D&D game I ran for a group of friends in high school, I was warned that one of the girls didn't like spiders. I, sickly, thought that it'd be cool to have giant spiders in the woods.

The girl ended up hiding under a blanket, shaking and refusing to come out until we told her they were gone.

This is the same young lady who, when I went to go see Return of the King with her, had to have her sister narrate the scene with Shelob. "Okay, so it's going across the ceiling now, over him, and he's . . . he's looking, but he doesn't - or does? No, no, he doesn't see it. And ooh! It stuck 'im in the chest with it's sticky thingy!"

Well,I for once would feel VERY disgusted if not frightened by a giant moth.Remember that scene from Resident Evil 2?Ick!
On consideration, just ignore me,ok?My insect phobia goes to Alienist levels.A single moderately-sized cockroach can force me to flee a room in haste. And I know it's not like that little thing can hurt me :( but try telling that to my adrenaline.

I may as well mention, this thought occured to me as I was rewriting the secription for 'shadowkin elves' in my homebrew setting. I origininally had them as underground dwelling, venomous-aminal worshipping evildoers... umm, yeah. Very novel.

So, I set out to change them. et's get rid of the light allergy... put them in the heart of the forest instead of caverns... make them fair skinned and dark haired (dark haired elves are universally considered bad luck IMC)... where do they live? I know, tree paltforms! Hmm... made of giant cobwebs and planks! Yes, they live with giant spiders! Dark elves with giant spiders, that's so original... so... original?

Darn.

She's obviously getting better.

Back then the thought was bad enough to shake her, but now only, if she can actually see them.

Desensibilization. :D

But I don't think giant moths would inspire that much terror in the hearts of players.
Well, what if giant moths exuded really strong pheremones? Other moths would be attracted to them, but maybe everything else would be put to sleep. Or made nauseous. And maybe these giant moths would have several different kinds of scents they could exude. And maybe they are meat-eating moths....

You know, I really like this idea.:]

Really, mosquitoes (especially giant ones) would also potentially be very dangerous...

Actually Deadlands has giant mosquitoes, aka Texas Skeeters, in it and yes they are really nasty. (although they go down pretty fast when you have shotguns ready)

PULL!

Yes, they live with giant spiders! Dark elves with giant spiders, that's so original... so... original?

It could be worse--they could all use double scimitars.

"You've camped for the night. Your fire burns cheerfully, warding off the chill... until suddenly a moth the size of a pony lands right on it!"

Maybe giant moths would flutter around Flame Strikes, always fail their saves against [Fire] effects, and so forth.
