D&D 5E There's something surprising I miss about 4th edition and it's not what you think.

I suppose this could go under General rpg, but seeing as my love for it came out of 4th edition I'll put it here. So what is it that I find myself wishing was in 5e? Well it's not a rule at all, it's digest sized books that essentials put out! I know a few different systems have put out digest sized books (Savage Worlds, FATE, Castles and Crusades) regardless I find myself yearning for a digest sized 5e book. Hell, I would even settle for a digest version of the basic rules. So anyone else love digest sized books? Again, I'm surprised I miss them so much. It felt just so... concise.

I believe you can have Lulu print and perfect bound a digest size copy of the basic rules.

That's good to know, and I'll probably do that but I think i'll wait until the end of the year when basic is completed. I still don't know if I'll be 100% happy with the outcome since essentially it's scaling down the page. I enjoyed the essentials layout where everything was just one column instead of 2.

I'll probably do this to my copy of Basic as well, once we see a rules update.

But while I liked Essentials, I'm not a fan of the digest books. They just don't travel well. They bash too easily. I covered the edges of mine in Book Tape and they still look worn. And they look odd on my shelf next to the generations of other D&D hardcovers.

My digest sized books are called PDFs. They weigh nothing, take no space and are searchable. WotC needs to get on that, this isn't the 1970s.

What I really miss about 4E is a 1st through 3rd level that is balanced rather than having to randomly make new characters due to spontaneous disembowelment or decapitation.

Wow I thought the thread would devolve into 4e bickering much sooner than it did. Better late than never I guess? Seriously, this thread isn't about 4e mechanics it's about the presentation of the rules. One thing I HATED was that stark white background.
